I was looking at the cuddle beds cavy couture & pimp my piggy palace, when my OH announced his sister would be able to make them... Fair enough she is pretty handy with a sewing machine.
She's come back to him and said she wouldn't be able to get the materials for less than £10? :o

Can I be cheeky and ask how much people who make their how much it usually costs them?

I didn't think fleece & cotton fabric was that expensive. I don't know about the wadding though but it seemed cheap on Dunelm.

Maybe you could buy the materials you want and give them to her?

Hi I got fleece for £2.99 a metre from fabricland and thick wadding was £4.50 a metre. You can probably get the wadding cheaper from Ebay if you buy in bulk.

I buy 2 oz wadding from Dunelm Mill for 99p a metre. I use 3-4 layers of wadding (I find it works better for handsewing than thick wadding). If I buy nice fleece fabric instead of cheaper throws I pay £5.99 a metre from Fabric World online.
If I bought the same in my local sewing shop I would pay £8.99 per m for the fleece and £2.75 per m for the same weight wadding. So if she's priced it based on this then she's right in that it's about £10 for materials. Although I would hope to get at least 4 beds out of a metre of fabric (so would need 3-4 metres of wadding for the way I make them).

Hope that makes sense. :)

I think maybe she meant that she wouldn't be able to buy material for just one and that's why it's more expensive than you thought? I buy fleece for about £5/metreand wadding for about £3. Add a spool of thread and you're almost at 10.

I've had people suggest to me I should make stuff and sell, but it wouldn't be worth the effort, really. Not if I wanted to try and make money out of it. My first batch of stuff I donated was 40 items and they sold them for 100 sek each (about £8 ). So the profit for the rescue was 4000 but then I had probably bought material for about 1000 and then spent four whole days sewing. So the hourly rate wouldn't be brilliant, not for someone as inexperienced as me anyway :)

I just use fleece blankets for anything i make, they make between 4-5 beds/tunnels. I use the £1.99(middle thickness) wadding from Dunelm Mill and it lasts ages :)
