Hello, I’m not used to having male guinea pigs. Squeaky has always had his penis tucked away but today it’s sticking out for an extended period. Is this ok? Excuse my ignorance.

Hello, it’s perfectly fine and he should hopefully retract his penis by himself but do keep an eye on it over the next day or two as the penis can dry out the longer it is out. My late Edwards penis was hanging out his foreskin and on closer inspection, he had a lot of debris and a build up of smegma. A quick clean from the vet nurse and it retracted itself again x

Hi

Please have a look at it as to how it is looking or if a semen rod (dried semen fluid) is preventing its retraction.

Here is our illustrated Boar Care guide that helps you check out a penis/penis shaft: Boar Care: Bits, Bums & Baths

I have cleaned the area but it hasn’t helped.

Have you expressed it fully? Sometimes they get gunk at the base of it? Have you tried poking it back in gently?

The penis is not extended fully and it looks like something could be stuck further down; it shouldn't be distented around the base like that.

Sorry I have read the information but could you clarify exactly how I do the expressing?

Could he have hair tied around it? Or he could have a sperm rod stuck? He could be in some discomfort. If you can’t express it yourself, I suggest a check with the vet or vet nurse as the penis is very delicate. They can show you what to do for future reference x

There are somevgood boar care videos on You Tube, especially Saskia at Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue. She does demos on personal care for boars. Your vet nurse can show you how to inspect and care for your boar's bits.

Thank you really helpful, no hair in the area

Good that you are you are seeing a vet; that would have also been our recommendation.

He has likely a quite a large or awkward sperm rod stuck in there which would cause an infection at some point, not to mention his discomfort, poor boy! A vet is best poised to get it out as it will likely need more than one person or even a whiff of sedation.

Fingers crossed that he is going to be a lot happier coming home again! :)

Sperm rods can be very painful. This is the largest one I had to extract (very carefully!) from my Rainbow Piggy Christian who had spinal arthritis and sperm rods were an almost daily extraction job 🤢 as he couldn't remove them himself.HUGE Sperm Rod.webp

Here is Christian as he was such a handsome chap (I called him Christian as he was several shades of grey)

The vet was very thorough and could not find a sperm rod. He thinks it most likely that this is the result of his recent neutering, has anyone else had this happen? He was fine at his post op check but has occurred at 2.5 weeks later. He’s trying antibiotics and anti inflammatory medication for now.

Squeaky has been to the vet who did the original castration and she doesn’t think the problem is related. She’s baffled and thinks he may need to have a penis amputation! He may have a kidney stone stuck in it.
Can anyone speak from experience with these issues?
So worried!

Oh gosh. I’m so sorry. I think if Squeaky had a bladder stone stuck, he’d be in a lot of pain especially as stuck stones can cause a back flow of urine which is a life or death emergency situation.

I think kidney stones which are different to bladder stones are usually inoperable and do not travel that far down as they stay in the kidneys but I could be wrong.

I hope someone with more experience comes along soon x

Can anyone else advise me on this problem? I would really appreciate knowing if others have faced anything similar?

A kidney stone is in the kidney (or the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder). It’s not the same as a bladder stone. A kidney stone is sadly inoperable. A bladder stone can be operated on and removed

Boars have an awkward angle in their urethra which stops them being able to pass a bladder stone - the stone gets stuck in the penis. That can block the flow of urine and becomes an emergency situation. The bigger the stone the more the risk

Is he displaying trouble urinating?
What ate his pain levels like?
Blood in urine at all?
Is his weight stable?
Is he due to be seen by the vet again?

I’m afraid I have never come across a penis amputation on here

He appears to be passing urine ok, no blood, weight stable. The only symptom is that the penis is exposed. He seems well in himself.
He’s on antibiotics while we observe him and then we need to contact the vet again, she said she could do an X-ray next. Having another anaesthetic is not ideal but I guess it would help to know what is going on?

Yes - you do need to find out what is causing this issue.
A stone stuck in the urethra would be very painful so if he does have one then it may be small - large enough to get stuck but small enough to not cause the life threatening issues a stuck stone causes

I hope he is ok

Wishing him all the best. We’ve always had boars but haven’t seen this issue. 🤞
