Male or female?

as in body temperature, i never knew they varied.

tbh, females are easier to keep than males because they can be together, whereas males are usually a one man show, unless they have been together a long time. Also female pairs need less attention that a single boar.

I have five sows who all live together very happily and never fight . . . but then I've never kept boars.

I don't think it really matters. Most people say that boars are more likely to fall out but I don't know whether that's so true, I've heard of lots of sows falling out too.

If you go to a rescue and see what they have you can choose a pair which you like and whatever sex they are doesn't really matter :)

I disagree with M&R about most boars having to be kept alone, I think that most can be paired up, it's just that people don't spend enough time finding a piggy that they would like to live with.

I'm not sure about the temperament..my boys are lovely though :) I think it just depends on the piggy and what its personality is like.

I have four boars and two sows.

Sunshine and Twinkle can have the ocassionaly disagreement but they have never had a major falling out.

Pudsey rumbles at Eccles but again they have not had a falling out.

Flora and Fleur my two sows are sisters and sometimes Fleur chatters at Flora when she is upset over something.

It's about striking the right balance if you go for boars. A dominant male with a laid back boar would work well. If you go to a rescue you may be able to take an established pair of boars or sows or you may find a neutered boar who can live with a female. :)

i've had both and not noticed a lot of difference. My 2 boars i had together were brothers, and therefor never fighted, i think if you are going to get boars then make sure they are bonded. The Sows i have had have also been fine, they occasionally get a little bitchy but no fighting :) they say that boys are better pets, but i haven't found it so, the girls have been very affectionate.
I think it depends a lot on the indivisual. You may get a boar that is grumpy, or equally a sow, that is my opinion. both my boys and girls have been lovely :smitten: :smitten:

Boars are full of character we have pairs and trios of boars that all get on well. Boars can fall out over dominance (especially when they go thorugh their teenage stages and if they can smell ladies) but if boars are provided with plenty of room a food bowl/water bottle/house each we find generally they get on really well. they have the odd rumble to re-enforce the pecking order but they generally co-exist peacefully. Our trios are in 6ft by 2ft housing and get on great!
Always have a spare cage handy though just in case if you are keeping boars once a pair is seperated it is hit and miss whether they will be re-introduced successfully.
Adults introduced to young boars has works well as long as you keep an eye when the younger boy gets teenage, but mixing adult boars is a very difficult process, neutering and pairing with a lady or pairing with a young boar are our first choices.

Sows can be great in groups, we have had a few stroppy ones who are very dominant but generally they accept each other well. Some sows mix effortlessly but we have had a couple who definately did not like new arrivals, my one and only guinea bite was from splitting two girls having a fight the minute they met!

It all really comes down to the personality of the pig not what gender they are, if areas of competition are removed with ample food water, hiding spaces and room most guineas will get on, some tolerate each other others fall in love and are inseperable.

i would get females

my 6 girls are as good as gold (aport from lilly she a tomboy)

and boys well max and aflie are not too bad but there both live alone as not got any with other males

my 4 baby boys wo been together seens birth well there are a handfull

if it was me i would stick to females

not much in it i have 21 in total at the mo!
11 are girls in a group of 7 and 4 with a neutered boar each and a pair on their own they all get on ok the odd squeak and fight but nowt serious but hey keep theemselves occupied wheras with the boars i have one coupled who are my old married couple so sweet and then therest are seperate boars but they come and chat more all the boys do and like cuddles more they don't get on with other boars but they are more people friendly
