They had two adorable sows in the P@H adoption center. One was a grey smooth coat, the other a REW rex. The reason being "Our owners didn't want us anymore". They were only small so it's doubtful they ever had owners and were more just unwanted stock or if they did, they were at their owners for more than a few weeks. :)>>>

I never usually go in but I had a £2 voucher off for excel and wanted to spend it before it expires on the 30th.

These two little girls were stood up on their back legs just looking at me, it took me all my will not to stop and get them since I have plenty of space for them.

I'm not sure whether I want to congratulate myself by standing by my morals or cry that I've not got them.

People may disagree with me, but if you've got the space and time for them and you really want them, I don't see what's wrong with you getting them. I know rescues are better, but in my opinion, every guinea-pig deserves a home, and as its the adoption center, you can give a really small donation for them if you wanted, so P@H won't make much/any money from you having them.

Oh nooooo don't do it to me! Thing is I got a pig from P@H local to me, who was so ill that despite several vets trips and being referred to a guinea pig specialist she still died due to her being so ill. It broke my heart and sealed that I wouldn't get anything from P@H again.

I do feel that seven piggies, four rabbits and a hamster may be a bit too much as well but ........ rolleyes

No, I can't. I don't want too support them, but I do want those so much. So very torn right now ")

Aw,I refuse to go into places that sell piggies because I know I will fall in love and want to come out with themmallethead

if you feel you have enough already, then your head is saying"no" but your heart is saying yes! a very difficult position to be in, were they charging normal price for these two? i do know from other posts on here that p@h do sell unwanted stock as adoptions or rescues, so be careful that is nt the case here.

I didn't even ask as I didn't want to seem interested, start asking questions and come away with them. That's exactly why I stalled on getting them as they were both about 12weeks old, in my not not very expert opinion not old enough to have gone to a home and been given up already.

I have a few young guinea pigs at the moment, three less then a year old so to add a further two seems to be asking for trouble in a few years time when they get older and may possibly need vet treatment.

I think I'm talking myself out of this now, as much as my heart is telling me to go there now and get them before it shuts at 4 (I think) my head is probably going to rule. I wish I could stop thinking about them. :red

Plus, if I keep the space free I could possibly help a rescue piggy in the future.

(I really really want them 8...)

Personally I would congratulate yourself for not giving in. If I feel that something in my tummy for them and know it's in a pet store and shouldn't give in, like with my old boy Sam and my elderly boy Harvey, I got that feeling with them two and just had to take them home with me. I don't regret it though because Sam was in a much healthier and happier environment and Harvey, well he's had a brilliant life with Jasper and he was said to 'not get along with other boars', that type of usual tosh!

We don't have a local P@H but whenever I've been into various ones and seen the adoption bits, I always wonder 'if only I knew the real story why you're here...'

It's sad to see how many there are in pet stores and just not being able to help them as it does feel like rescuing them :(

Until joining this forum I had no idea of the issues with Pets at Home but I had got my Harvey and China from there and had no regrets whatsoever, nor have I ever seen anything at the store that concerns me.

Just personally speaking, I hope you go back and get the two sows! :)

My view is that if you get them, then there is the chance of them having health problems like many other P@H pigs. You are also just lining P@H's pockets. I wouldn't even consider getting them but thats just my opinion.

if you can give them all the care they need, and not worry about the cost, go get them,or give yourself 48 hrs, if you still want them and they are still there, you were meant to have them( just my opinion)

I think sometimes when we have the space, we will at some point fill it rolleyes
I had room and kept kidding myself that it was there in case any of my boars fell out in the future (they're brothers so reduces the risk)
When two piggies not long ago on here needed a new home...:(|) ;)

Well it's too late now to get them anyway and since I work full time I wouldn't be able to get there all week, hopefully by this time next weekend they will be out of my system (and gone).

I know in my heart of hearts, I don't want to support P@H but I had this voucher (which is any rescues want it they can have it (PM me!), only £2 but £2 is better than non) which expires on the 30th and it's the only place near me that sells small animal stuff so just popped in. Bad mistake!

I'm glad I posted on here and stalled myself, if not they would probably be coming home with me!

I agree in a sense.

Imagine you're getting a pair of pigs from there at say £15 (I have no idea how much the donation will be), that money would go towards buying another load of animals for a cheaper price than you donated towards those two. It's just how it works.

The garden centre mentioned before on here near me in Spalding, I was in there once and overheard someone ask how much they would offer on buying their baby budgies, and the guy who was manager at the time said to them a certain price which I think was about £12 or something, but THEY sell their birds at almost double the price!

Animals are just stock to almost all pet stores, no different to a cage or a bag of food. Buy cheap, sell high. It's just profit at the end of the day and it's sick to do that to an animal. You would never do that to a child so why an animal?

So like I said, just be thankful you didn't give in, although these babies deserve loving homes that we all could give them, from being on here, it's made total sense that it's not the way to go anymore :(

Exactly it's all this that made me doubt whether it was the right thing to do. I guess now I have the space to help out some more rescue guineas ... Every cloud!

Wow, such resolve! If that were me I would only have considered for 2 seconds! Sleep on it and see how you feel in the morning, if you really do want them you will find a way to pick them up x

Pets @ Home pay breeders £8 per piggy

I know this for a fact because thats what I paid for my Bumble - he was a litter of one and thats where he was going if I hadnt bought him - the lady I got him from is a hobby breeder & sells to garden centres as well - and said she would charge me the same price she gets from P@H:(

I know exactly how you feel, I have just been through something the similar myself, I fell in love with a baby (probably the sister or brother of my girls) in my local pet shop and I still cant get her / him out of my head .... its so hard 8...

The way these little creatures are kept makes me so angry grrrr :)>>>

It sucks, but well done on sticking to your principles, just don't go in there again! I have been banned from my local pet shop by my other half, cus I get so upset in there!

If your worried about how they are kept you could always contact the RSPCA or your local council!

:)
xx

Well done on not impulse buying and sticking to your morals.

Think about it - you buy these and they get replaced by more which have been bred in goodness knows what conditions and with what potential genetic problems / illnesses. Let alone the fact that it keeps pets at home selling. It's the same as the puppy farms you hear about. just awful.

If you have space for some guineas have a look at your local rescue webpages and choose some from there -c
