I have some mandarins at home and I am wondering if they can eat a mandarin peel 😅

No, citrus peel isnt an appropriate food and also often has many nasty pesticides on it as it isnt ever consumed by humans! Mandarins and other small citrus may be sprayed with some really nasty stuff that is on the skin but doesnt get through to the fruit flesh :(

I would assume the peel would be ok since it’s also often used in zests. Even then, it’s highly discouraged and even illegal in some places to sell fruit if it has more than the legal limit (which is the largest amount of pesticides/ herbicides/ fungicides that can be used with no side effects). This study tested hundreds of fruits (164 in this specific group) and only 3 of the pre-washed fruits exceeded the limit for their area.

Not to say that it’s safe for piggies; I personally wouldn’t feed it since I wouldn’t eat it myself, but to claim the outside has more pesticides to the point of being outright unsafe to eat is a bit far.
