Hiya.

Zuki has Mange Mites and I bought some spot on treatment from a pet store. We gave it him either at the beginning of this week or the end of last week, I can't remember. How long do I wait before I get more treatment?

It started with scabbing, very mild hairloss and dots of red blood on his front leg, they went and the skin went a healthy pink colour but now he has it on his back leg and further up his front leg. Again, just scabbing with red dots around it. I've gone on Lynx site or whatever it was called and it's mange mites...

He's eating drinking, demanding veggys but when not doing any of those, looks kinda glum. He doesn't look like he's over scratching but does bite himself, he's that type of pig anyhows.

We were/are going to take him to the vet this time next week no change. I'm at work everyday but Thursday and Saturday next week so these are my only chances.

If it is mange mites then it is very serious and can be painful for the piggy. Please get him seen by a vet as soon as possible for proper diagnosis and treatment. Pet shop products can often cause more harm than good.

He needs to go to the vets, Spot on won't be strong enough and he needs Ivermectin injections approximately a week apart for 3 weeks. He may be in pain too so I would ask the vet for some pain relief.

I echo what the others have said - this requires something from the vet. The things you can get from petshops aren't great (as demonstrated by the fact there's no dosing instructions!) and often the carrier fluids in them can cause problems of their own.

The one I bought has dosing instructions. It goes by the weight of the guinea pig/small animal.
I will book an appointment with my vet next week, he doesn't seem to be in any pain, nothings changed at all apart from me finding the scabs.

What a waste of time that was...

Do you know how much that vet visit cost me and I didn't even get the injection! I've been given another spot on treatment you use every 2 weeks. I can't even use it till the shop bought stuff has worn off... i've also been given the treated batril because she thinks his feet look a bit too red.

A grand total of £65! I've never had a problem with my vets, I see usually 1 of two vets and I'm never charged more the £24-£39 per visit... it cost us £70 on an emergency and over night stay (so you can see how shocked I am by this price). The spot on treatment is £30 alone! I'm so disgusted and angry... and if this doesn't work I'm goign to have to go back, fork out more and demand for that injection. AAAAAHHHH I'm sick of doing this every time my babies are sick, the vets rip you to pieces financially and never really do anything to help them. She also held him so his head was upside down... and she's suppose to be an expect >.<

Aww know how you feel.

I am the same don't know the price 'until it comes through on the computer' and the last time I went was expecting about £30 or near enough I couldn't hide the shock and literally said 'b hell' so loud (it just seemed to come out):))I do think they think we have a bottomless pit with regards to pets, trouble is there are no charges on the wall, don't know about yours.

Wouldn't they give the injections? Or are they too young?

I was given Xeno 450 a few times but I'm sure it just kept it at bay but didn't entirely go.

Both are near 3.5 year old, altho Zuki who has the actual symptoms, could be younger or older as he's adopted. They have set consultation fees but everytime I've been, they've never charged us two consultation fees for the pigs. They see both pigs as one and only charge the one... Kenya only had the once over to check that he was mite free ¬¬

Unfortunately pets come at a price; its private health care after all. If you want to know the prices...ask!

Just a little bit of info I find makes clients think. Having got sick to the back teeth of people complaining at the price of routine neutering, I called the private hospital up the road. We charge on average about £200 for a ***** spay (it varies a little due to size). Anyone want to hazard a guess how much the equivalent procedure on a human at the private hospital would be?

£6,500!
