Hi All,

I just wondered if massive weight gain is a problem? Last week Lyra who is 14 months weighed in at 883g (1.9lb) now she is 989g (2.2lb) which is an increase of 106g.

Her half sister Leia who is 13 months was 827g (1.8lb) last week and is now 816g (1.8lb) so only a loss of 0.3oz so I'm not concerned but either Lyra is scoffing all the food which I do think she did last night and having more than Leia.

The girls had mange mites over christmas and lost half their body weight and lots of fur. It was almost instant and I treated them with Xeno 450 and help from the vets and it done the trick. So they are just building up I expect.

But obviously having lost Elora at the same time to a probable heart defect I am concerned about Lyra as Elora was her sister. And if there was one thing about Elora that was different from the 2 girls was that she was chunky and had similar weight gain.

I don't think I will be putting these 2 girls back out for the summer. Mainly because not knowing the outcome of what will happen to them I need to monitor them closely to ensure they don't go the same way as Elora. They also need to be tamed up. Leia hates me and I mean teeth chattering constantly when I go to pick her up but she loves Peter! Daddy's girl! Haha!

Thanks!

Louise

She is probably building upto her "proper" weight rather than putting on excess weight. I would not deny them the pleasure of being out on the grass when the weather improves.

Thanks, oh yes I will put them out on the grass. I love watching them have fun grazing. But my pigs in the summer live in my shed in cages. And I bring them in for winter. I will keep the 2 girls in but allow them to graze during the day.

Thanks for your help. :)

I'd not be worried Louise, Haggis gained 116g last week making a total of 168g total gain in the 3wks he's been here :)

I too am thinking they're getting back to their pre-illness weight :)

I agree...
Look at Bertie who was just over 850g last Thursday when we thought he was dying and 1005g tonight before dinner... he's just been happy munching on everything he can, looking and behaving happy. His weight prior to that was 1050g and before we found the lump he was at 1250g. Still a long way to go.
How much did she weigh before the mites?
