Mating

Can i ask something? I have 2 male guinea pigs. Must i have to mate my guinea pigs? If not, do they get sick? :(

No, not at all! Not mating will not affect them at all. In fact it can be very dangerous for the female piggy.

They can live happily together as bonded entire males for their whole lives.

Do they live together?

Welcome to the forum - if you have any questions about anything, just ask!

Thanks for your answer. The live together for 1 year :)

That's great :)

They like company and they have that with each other. Putting a female near the two males would make them fall out and fight. Don't want to go upsetting them when they're happy :)

I just asked because my friend told that i must mate them or neutered and i got afraid. I don't want to do anything. I want for them to be happy together....

Hello and welcome to the forum. Amanda is right, there is no need to mate or neuter your males at all. Mating will be a mindless pregnancy and neutering is unecessary surgery. I'm glad they are living together happily. Your friend does not know about guinea pigs so please do not worry.

x.

No, mating is not necessary at all; it will only risk your two boars to fight and permanently fall out with each other when they are being put back together after they have been with sows. Guinea pigs can live perfectly happy and healthy to an old age without having had babies.

In addition, one about in five sows being bred will die from complications and pups being born dead or dying are even more frequent, so it is far too risky to casually breed! Please give this link to whoever told you the myth that guinea pigs need to be bred!

PS: Neutering guinea pig boars only removes the ability to make babies but - unlike with rabbits - it does not change their temperament!

As your boys are both over the hormonal months between 4-12 months old, you should not have any problems from now on. They have stood the test of time. :))

No need to breed guinea pigs for the sake of their health. I suppose when they are not neutered it's technically possible for them to develop testicular cancer at some point in the future. However, with small animals the risk of complications from preventative surgery is usually higher than the risk of cancer developing down the line.

Cancer is still very rare in guinea pigs.

But the chances of them not surviving an operation and developing life threatening post op complications is a LOT higher, especially if you haven't got access to a small animals specialist!

Why risk your boys' lives for something that is not likely to happen?
