Hi have been trying to find it on the forum but can't see. I have got some metcalm from the vet for snowy as his face is a little sore and a little puffy from his scrap with his brother. Wound is all clean etc so no worries bout infection just wanted to to give him some pain relief. When he was on Baytril for his UTI the piggy vet had him on 0.3 mls of metacalm twice a day but the other vet from the same sugery has said 0.6mls up to twice a day when needed for therecent injury/ illness is it to much? will only be for as few days

Sorry I don't know the answer but it might help get a more accurate answer if you specify whether it's the dog strength or the cat strength version which you have. Hopefully someone else can help soon x

They both sound alot to me, I was prescribed 0.1ml per day of cat strength for furby

It depends on which kind of metacam you're having, cat or dog (cat is less strong). I have read on another post that you shouldn't give the same amount you would a cat of guinea pig size.

About the appropriate amount for your piggy you'd best pm Laura-CCC4; she's our medication buff on the forum.

the vet who prescribed 0.3ml is the cavy savy man so i think i trust him *** snowy was really poorly at the time but .6 seems loads :{ will PM Laura and see thanks guys x

I've always used the dog one and was told just "one drop" daily....well a drop size can obviously vary, so that's a little vague (and I also think it's probably on the low side) but I think Laura has experimented with measuring Metacam drops and converted it to a more precise range in mls, for accurate consistent dosage via syringe. I'm sure I've seen it mentioned here before. The dosages you mentioned in your OP also sound high to me too, but I'm really not sure....I'll see if I can find Laura's post.

have PM'd laura will see thanks guys i really think .6 is loads maybe he meant up to . 6 a day either in 1 or mallethead2 doses

My vet says 0.3ml (cat strength) once a day but if not helping can go up to 0.5ml

I can't find the post I was thinking of but I've found this post where Laura refers to 0.3ml twice daily (dog strength) as being a high dosage and for short term only. It sounds like this is the maximum she'd recommend. I personally definitely wouldn't go above that but see what Laura comes back with as I trust her judgement.

excellent thanks for the post i will stick to no more than .3 twice a day for the next day or so if i dont hear from laura then thats it his face is healing quickly just looked a little uncomfy when attempting to stuff his face! thanks again guys x>>

I've replied to Claire by PM but for reference, this is a copy of the message I sent her (hope you don't mind Claire!):

I have heard of 0.6ml being prescribed, but I can't comment on whether it's too high simply because I've not experienced dosing at this level and the most common dosage recommended is 0.1ml 2x daily.

As such, if I was in your position - with the vet having prescribed 0.6ml 1-2x daily and other owners saying it sounds too high - I'd give 0.3ml 2x daily. I have given this dose to my own pigs safely, and by dosing like this you're still sticking with what the vet said, still giving 0.6ml - just split into two doses.

Splitting pain relief into two doses tends to be more effective generally, providing pain relief around the clock rather than having it wear off a few hours before the next dose is due.

Last time I asked (admittedly around two years ago) the CCT also recommended 0.3ml Metacam 2x daily.

Just to clarify....

Do you mean that the CCT advised 0.3ml twice daily as a maximum dosage or as a standard, general dosage? And I assume this refers to the dog strength Metacam only? If so, do you know the CCT recommendation for the cat strength too please?

Unfortunately I couldn't say further Susan - all she said was that she advises 0.3ml Metacam 2x daily but finds Rimadyl to be a better tolerated drug.

No clarification was given on dog or cat strength - didn't know back then about the two different concentrations - or maximum dosage.

Not to worry - just me fretting over every minor detail as per usual! Still useful to know so thanks anyway!

Next time I need some I'll ask for Rimadyl instead of Metacam. Do they basically do the same job? Do you know if Rimadyl is suitable for pigs with kidney problems? Sorry...lots of questions!

I've only had rimadyl for my dog but when used regularly after a few years it can cause tummy problems but that was her on it every day for her hips and i expect it is the same for any medication. Rimadyl is a non-steroidal anti inflamatory and pain killer the same as metacalm i think
