PS: the hutch is 2 story 4ft on each level and i am getting 2 piggies probably girls and i am adopting them from a local animal shelter

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

It's very noble of you to adopt from the local animal shelter.

Hopefully someone will be along to answer the specifics of your question in more detail.

Hi and :wel: to the forum!

I'm sure you've already found it but this is a really good thread to help you with the decision to get guinea pigs

http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/faq-are-guineas-pigs-for-me.36801/

It's really great of you to make sure it's the right decision before you get them and that you want to adopt rescue piggies :)

It'd really help if you could give us an idea of where you're located in your profile and that will help everyone to give you the most appropriate advice for where you are.

I'd say in the UK it's probably not the right time to be placing piggies outside if they're indoors at the minute. Also because of the change in temperatures it's not advised to take them in for lap time and then back out again. However if you're elsewhere and the temperatures are different then it might be ok. Whatever your temperatures you need to be able to ensure you can keep them warm in the cold weather and cool in the warm weather - there's lots of advice on the forum on how to do this.

In terms of you going to school, this shouldn't be a barrier to getting piggies as long as you're not boarding away somewhere and leaving the pigs alone for more than a day. Plenty of piggy owners all go out to work or school and manage to look after their pigs really well. I myself go to uni and so the pigs get fed before I leave in the morning and then have a hay change and pellets when I get home and more veg in the evening. It's also important to ensure you'll have time for cuddles and floor time most days :)

:clap:Ok thank you so much I have decided to get them and oops I forgot to put my location I will do that now but I'm located in Gold Coast queensland in Australia lol but thank you soooooo much for your advice

Hi and welcome!

It is great that you are going rescue!

Please be aware that it is not a good idea to have your piggies outside during your current extreme at the moment; a hutch on the patio can easily become a death trap in temperatures over 25-30 C, especially one that is not constantly in the shade during the hottest hours and that is on a sheltered patio that is throwing the heat around. Warnings from Australian rescues are making the rounds on facebook at the moment! Guinea pigs can suffer from heat stroke. Here are tips: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/hot-weather-management-and-heat-strokes.105317/

Please also make sure that you have a good vet within your reach and that you discuss vet care cost with your parents. Vets in Australia are sadly not cheap - they cost a multiple of what getting a piggy will cost you! Adults often don't see the need to spend a lot of money on such a small animal, not aware that a healthy animal can live 4-7 years on average.

Otherwise, enjoy your piggies! We have got informative threads at the top of each section that you may find helpful, but you are welcome to ask any questions that you may have.

Ok thank you and I spoke to my parents and we are going to have them inside during the day and outside at night because it gets cooler at night (but not to cold) and yes we do have a vet near us and my parents are aware that they may need to go for emergencys so they are on boards with that :) thank you for your advice
