Hi everyone! So, yay! I am getting my two Abyssinian piggies soon! :(|) I am sooo excited! I have been researching for 5 months now, so I think I am ready. I went through, taming, handling, health care, diet etc. I know that hay makes up A LOT The Piggie Diet. At let me tell you this, it is not easy to get your hands on a bale on hay here in the Philippines. 8:) So, I finally found a seller that has 24 - 28 oz of Timothy Hay.
Question # 1: Will that last a LONG time?/

Ok, so I told my dad and he asked me where the seller was. I gulped and checked again, it was FAR AWAY from where we were! He looked at me and said that we could get it if, there was no other choice. (Either he really cared about the guinea pigs or he just wanted to give me an early happy birthday present) So, I looked again around local pet stores and found a really good supplier. I am NOT going to get my pigs there, (I am getting them from a good breeder) but I found hay. But it was not Timothy Hay, it was Meadow Hay. I researched again, and found different answers. So, I am confused.
Question # 2: Is Meadow Hay ok for guinea pigs?

And lastly I looked again because I was unsure. But got no other answers. Then, my mom asked me if I wanted to go to the grocery with her, I was bored and said yes. As always, looked at the pet supplies. And I found ANOTHER type of hay... Mountain Hay. It had the picture of a guinea pig and a rabbit.
Question # 3: What is mountain hay?!

So, now for the ULTRA IMPORTANT QUESTION OF ALL.....

Which of the three types of hay is best in my situation?
Sorry if the post is too long, I just had LOADS of questions.

My pigs hardly ever get timothy hay, they get meadow 24/7 and then the get oat/what/barley/orchard grass etc every now and then as a treat

I think it depends on how easy it is to get hold of, the cost to you etc really. Meadow hay is fine, it will probably be cheaper & easier for you to get hold of & the most important thing is that the piggies should have ready access to hay all the time, as it is essential for their well being rolleyes

It depends on availability, the preference of the piggies and your preference. I like meadow and mountain because it is long stranded and quite thin which makes it soft and comfy for them, and easy to clean up for me. I don't like short stranded hays as they seem to have more dust in them, and thus are harder to clean up, and as my pigs live inside, create more dust.

I guess the best advice I can give is to try out a few types and see which one you can get hold of and which you and the piggies like. Also remember that variety is good, so if you can't get hold of one then try another. The piggies will like it.

The MOST important thing is to make sure that whatever type you get, the quality is good. Not damp, not smelling musty, and as dust free as possible.
