Hi there

Just had to take my little guinea for an emergency appointment as she has the beginnings of an eye infection. The vet I saw was lovely but not a guineas specialist (she is seeing one on Monday). She has prescribed eye antibiotics which are fine and ones I am familiar with. However she has also prescribed Metacam for pain relief (0.5mg/ml oral suspension for cats). I have always used Rimadyl, again I am fine with Metacam but I am not sure on the dosage she prescribed. Lacey weighs 1008g so a nice healthy weight, is 1ml metacam a day OK? Just sounded a lot but I may well be completely worried about nothing. Just wondering if anyone has example doses from previous treatments which will put my mind to rest. (I do appreciate you are not vets but some reassurance needed!)

Thanks

It goes on weight there is some info on guinea lynx on it if you search there. I know my 1200g male was having 0.4ml a day and the vet said it was fine to give this twice day as they can break it down easily. Guinea Lynx has some good info it on it though :)

Yes, from memory the cat metacam is 0.5mg/ml whereas the dog one is 1.5mg/ml so it's 3 times the strength.

I would therefore assume (and someone correct me if I am wrong) that 1ml of cat metacam is equivalent to 0.33ml of dog metacam which is a safe dosage on a guinea pig (dependent on weight)
