Stripe has CBS and a vet previously prescribed. .39 metacam daily.

Well we saw a new vet and she said keep the dose but every other day.

Will this be effective as an anti-inflammatory?

This is the forum guide to CBS etc in case any of the information in it is useful.

If the condition is causing Stripe pain, then giving metacam every other day is going to leave him in pain some of the time in my opinion. I guess the best way to know if he does still need pain relief, would be to reduce how much he has and see if he loses appetite and weight or behaves differently. If he does then it shows he still needs all that metacam.

A dose will be out of his body within 24 hours, so no it won’t be as effective.

Is the vet trialling to see what his pain management needs are?

I'm not sure. She said it could affect his kidneys despite their high metabolism.

My Rainbow Piggy Silver Fox Christian was put on 0.7ml Metacam twice a day for a couple of years for arthritis of the spine. Very slowly under close vet supervision, I managed to lower it to 0.5ml twice a day. He was on Metacam for around 4 years. I chose for him to have a shorter pain free life than a longer life filled with pain. He still lived to 5½ years.

Hi

You have to distinguish between an acute pain event and long term pain support.

In an acute, short term pain event we recommend to give metacam once or even twice daily in order to minimise the periods between dosages when it wears off and the pain comes back. It comes down to whether your piggy is dealing with the pain better on one larger or two smaller dosages, or even two larger dosages.

The combination with CBS (which is currently not prescribed by UK vets) will change the amount of metacam prescribed compared to the higher and more often given UK metacam dosages in order to provide as constant a pain cover as possible.

However, with long term metacam support, the metacam is going to build up in the body and you are looking at usually lower maintenance dosages which can be given once daily or in milder cases/in combination with other pain medication only every second day. Again, you can give the two day interval a try and see whether it works for your piggy or not. Again, depending on the pain and the medication used, levels have to be individually adapted.

Finding and adjusting the right pain support level is always an individual process, especially with long term support where the support level and needs can and often will change over time and may have to be combined with other pain meds.

Generally, the benefits in quality of life and regained/retained zest of life in older piggies outweigh other longer term considerations re. metacam (kidney damage) because it is the will to live which important life-prolonging factor in end of life care.

I hope that this helps to clarify any conflicting advice?
