All the food is kept in a dustbin so they cant get to it....but they can obviously just hop into the pen and eat from the piggies bowl when they want.

How am i going to get rid of them?

They wont go near a trap when food is easily accesible and i can't put poision down incase it somehow manages to get near the piggies.

What am i goin to do?!

My piggies are inside, i just dont have anywhere to move them to so i can clear the room mallethead

I think they are in the airing cupboard, so i can set traps in there. Hopefully once i've cleared it all out i'll have a better idea where they are...

Oh poor you, this is my worst nightmare. Daft as it sounds whilst I love all things small and furry I'm not keen on wild mice! I think it's just because of the potential damage they can do to our piggies/buns.

I heard on the news the other evening that rat/mice infestation in the UK is up by a third on last year. They were blaming a combination of once fortnightly rubbish collection and previous mild winters allowing the rodents to breed.

We think we have mice in our loft so I am off to B&Q to try to track down some traps. They are supposed to love peanut butter so will get some of that as well. Good luck with your problem, keep us posted.

I am also off to B&Q!

The guinea pigs have suddenly got bad skin and now I'm wondering if they have caught lice or something from the mice.

You have my sympathies, fortunately the mice were in the shed & i could bring the piggies inside.

My food is in bins but just the same they were feeding from the piggies bowls & right in front of me.

I tried peanut butter and caught one mouse, the others i caught using the piggies food - thankfully there's been no signs of them this week at all but the piggies are staying in for now.

I don't like killing them but didn't have any success with the humane traps & couldn't have them toileting on my piggies food :(

Only suggestion i can make is to remove your piggies dry food bowls overnight, making sure they still have plenty of hay & put the traps near their cages.

My traps are Rentokil traps from Wilkinsons - £2.69 each

Good Luck with them :)

I will be doing just that tonight, the piggies are munching on their bowl of pellets and i will be giving them their veg before bed time.

Then its trap time.
Atleast someone understands, i got called cruel on the rabbit forum for asking about traps. I dont want to kill them but then i dont want them amking my piggies ill either.

Could be a reaction to mouse urine.
I'd pop them (the pigs) to the vets just for a check up and peace of mind.

Well they have reacted well to some Gorgeous guinea products and also have Xeno 450 on order for mites.

I just don't want mice near my babies 8...

We had a mouse in our shed outside and I was wondering whether it had been eating their food. My dad bought me a couple of traps and I caught it within a day with a chocolate button! I haven't seen any evidence of it again so I'm hoping it was just the one. However, you mentioning the bad skin, one of ours has a small bald patch on his back. It was previously where a small cut was but the cut had long gone. I'm starting to wonder whether it's something to do with the mouse now!

Anyway, I've been keeping the bag of food inside the house now so there's only hay bags in the shed. I hope he's gone!

I have recently joined the rabbit forum as i have just adopted a rabbit but the forum just doesnt seem as friendly as this one (i know quite a few people are on both) but there is a weird vibe over there, i much prefer the piggy forum!

Good luck with your mice! i once had a mouse in my bedroom, my mum had seen it and not told me about it, i was getting changed and saw the little thing run across my room! I put a human trap down for it but never saw it again, must have crawled into the floorboards and died somewhere lol :))

LOL, a human trap should do it! Must have been a BIG mouse :))

I had a problem with a rat near my shed but it was living in my compost bin and eating all the scraps, so I got a sealed tumbling compost bin so they can't get in and haven't seen it since

I didn't want to kill them either but i had a feeling there was a nest as i'd heard a squeaking noise a few times before i found evidence of them. I did ask my vet about them when i took one of my buns, he said altho it was highly unlikely for them to pass on disease for hygiene reasons it'd be a good idea to remove them.
My piggies didn't shown any outward signs of illness but they'd all dropped weight - i can only attribute this to them not eating as much of their dry food/hay because it was soiled by the mice.
Since coming indoors they're gaining weight again :)

One of my piggies has lost weight but i think it may be her teeth.

I have treated a few of them with Neem to rule out anything fungal, and then it'll be Lice and Easy before treating with the Xeno. Obviously not all at once!

They've just been a bit itchy lately so hope they havent got any little nasties from the mouse.

To be honest the best way to get rid of them is to find out where their access is and block it off. It took me ages to do this but this plus a couple of humane traps worked wonders.

Just be really careful with them getting into the pig's cage. I had set a humane trap and was checking it twice daily only to find a mouse dead in it one morning. Its poo was completely blue so it was eating poison somewhere. I'd hate that to be near my piggies.

Well as my house is so old and has two cellars, they coulkd be coming from anywhere!

My dad blocked up a couple of holes, but the trouble is we have to leave the shed door slightly open for ventilation. And since it's been open a while now, it won't shut at all now! So I have to prop it shut with bricks of a night. If it's a sunny day, I do like to leave it open a bit for some daylight for the piggies!
