Does anyone feed their piggies mint? I know in the food guide it’s a permitted food. My neighbour has given me some from their allotment and I just want to double check as I’ve never given it to my boys before because of the strong aroma

I've always found mint to be a bit hit and miss, it's like guinea pig Marmite. They love it, or they wonder why you're feeding their buddy treats and demand to know where theirs is too, because they clearly can't be expected to eat that weird stuff.

All mine used to fight over it, now Delilah gets it all to herself.

Ours love it. It grows like mad in the garden so we tend to use mint leaves as treats whenever the children want to do some hand feeding, etc.

Mine love mint and I grow it in the garden. I have to be careful where I put their run if I put it to close to the mint plant they will go mad trying to help themselves.xx

Jess has never changed her mind in 7 and a half years about mint, despises it! Dried mint on the other hand she loves, fussy madam! 🤷‍♀️The other two like a nibble but don’t run and hide from the stuff like her!

Mine love mint and they will also eat basil, cilantro, parsley, dandelion, which all have strong aroma and taste.

Anything strong smelling sends Jess flying to the other end of the cage! I save basil for playtime for the others now so I don’t stress her out too much with her hatred of the stuff! Pigs! 🙄
Can be annoying at times, especially as the other two follow her as top pig, Aliona’s starting to get a bit fussy with certain things which she definitely wasn’t when she moved in January!
Thankfully Luigi doesn’t care, it’s food!

They seem to know exactly what they are all about, 😂

For the longest time (well okay, it was probably only about 6 weeks but it felt like forever) Comet wouldn't eat anything except spinach and lettuce. Spinach and lettuce does not a good diet make. He started refusing parsley AND peppers which he usually loved, and refused to eat spinach unless he was given it stalk first. There was nothing wrong with him, btw, he was just being difficult lol.
I remember in despair trying him with thyme, thinking it was strong smelling so he wouldn't touch it. And instead it cured his fussiness overnight. Thyme, of all things. He even started eating mint at that stage...which Blitzen was not best pleased about :))

Bottom line is, a piggy decides what he or she likes on an hourly basis. If they're not fussed on mint first time around, don't go out of your way to get it again but keep trying them with it if it's easily available. They might change their mind. They also might not, lol.

The Ever Beautiful Betsy is just the same! Anything that is edible she will scoff. If breakfast/dinner doesn't arrive when she thinks it should (Miss Diva!:gd:) I get teeth chattering and she has even taught Cutey Pie Dennis to teeth chatter too! (Dennis wouldn't say boo to a goose)

how do you guys feed your mint? do you pull the leaves off the stems or do you just throw a little bunch into the pen and let them go to town on it? and is this the same with other safe herbs?

I just a piece off the plant, stem as well, except if the stem is tough and then I will only feed the leaves.
coriander, basil, dill, parsley can all be fed stem as well. However, coriander is the only herb which can be fed daily - the others have higher levels of calcium so need to be fed more sparingly and no more than once per week
