My pig has mites can I use the treatment if the pig has scratched a wound open?

Topical Ivermectin is designed to be absorbed into their system, and can be ingested when they groom themselves, so I don't think there's any danger if there's an open wound and the Ivermectin touches it. I don't know if it would be stingy for them so I would try to apply it away from the scratched area. Maybe give the scratch a gentle clean with a cotton bud and some saline or chlorohexidine if you have it so it lessens the chance of infection.
That said, I've not been in this position before, so maybe someone else will know for sure the best thing to do.

I would check with a vet first, to make sure it definitely is mites and you have the correct strength treatment- also if your piggy has scratched and broken the skin the wounds might get infected so a vet might prescribe an antibiotic too to prevent that.

Please consult a vet for formal diagnosis. The forum does not recommend home treating on spec. There are different types of mites and other problems that can mimic mites so you need to be sure what the problem is and that you have the correct treatment. Also, otc medication is seldom strong enough to eradicate the problem. Also with an open wound there is an infection risk. Please get a vet to check the piggy to diagnose and prescribe.

I was assuming the treatment had come from the vet, if not then defo follow the last two posters' advice.

Hi, i’ve also has a mite infestation about 3 weeks ago and i’ve washed all the fleece bedding but I just wanted to ask if i’m supposed to throw away the hay hideaways? or would it be okay to keep it in the cage although it was in there during the mites infestation
