I know there already have been a few threads about this subject recently but I'm still trying to get my head around how to diagnose and when to treat. I have attached a picture of one of my sow's rear on which you can see a few flakes of what I would think to be dandruff. She is not scratching excessively and has no skin breaks. I would be grateful for advice on whether I should be treating her.

Tagging @helen105281 as she is knowledgeable on skin and @Wiebke as they are my two 'go to' gurus for skin issues as I have little experience.

Sometimes our piggies have a few 'skin flakes' on the fur similar to that and it turns out to be nothing, I would check the actual skin for baldness or any redness and scabs. It could just be a bit of dry skin.
The times we have had fungal it has started out with a bald patch then got cut and scabby.

It is not always quite as easy to distinguish whether you are dealing with mites, a fungal infection or just dry skin. Indoors piggies are more prone to dry skin, especially over the winter months when the heating is on.

If in doubt, see a piggy savvy vet, especially once you are faced with plenty of scratching and/or bald patches. He can really get a close up look at the problem and can make his diagnosis accordingly, unlike us!

I agree with Wiebke, it's difficult to tell from a photo, it could just be dry skin but if it is mites or fungal it can develop very quickly so best to see a vet before that happens.

Thank you for the advice @Wiebke & @helen105281.

To be honest, I have been doing my evening spot clean since posting this and can't see anything wrong with her tonight. I will keep a close eye on her and her companions.

My boar (Max) had mites approx a month ago and the vet has treated him twice with spot on - the last time being about a fortnight ago. I have checked him over thoroughly and he has no skin breaks or scabs. He still has that inverted V - as mentioned on the gorgeous guineas website ...

but I think this is just where his fur is growing back as he had broken skin.

Before he started his treatment - I was itching too!

I will see how they are tomorrow.

Fortunately, I think this was a false alarm . I have checked Bess over today and can't see any sign of any flakes and definitely no skin breaks. Max looks OK too- the V shape on his back is less prominent so I think all I can see is his hair growing back .
I adopted my 2 sows just over a week ago and, initially , I was wondering if the stress of moving had triggered a problem.
It's nice to share when things like this happens and I am so grateful for the advice I get whenever I post a thread on this forum.
I am going to post some pictures of them now I know they're all OK.

my Maple has had no end of problems with her skin. Shes got a new gel based skin cream for when she scratches her skin to much. Confirmed its not mites or mange. Shes just an awkward one...

App after smothering furry piggies with it the mites suffocate and after a few weeks the fur starts to grow back and they are fine?!
I have 2 skinnies and have been told this would be great for normal dry patches. It was originally made for soothing cows udders after milking
