on Friday I collected 4 babys from my work. they are around 4 weeks old. 2 of them have got scabbing and redness around their face and ears. I took them to the vets as soon as I picked them up and she said to treat them for mites as they had been kept in crowded unsuitable conditions in which mites can take a hold. so, on Friday, I treated them each with half tube invectermin based spot on ( to be repeated in 2 weeks time) and have been bathing the scabs and applying tea tree oil based cream. the scabs seen to be clearing a little but the skin is very raw looking and I noticed little clover really scratching this morning - all over, not just at the scabs. I am a bit worried now that it may be getting worse or could possibly be fungal as opposed to mites! I have got to go back to vets in just over a week for a skin scrape if not any better, but in the meantime do you think I should try applying some anti fungal cream on the scabs? I don't want to make things worse! any advise wouldbe welcome! just to add, the babies are 250 g hence
the reason I only used half tube of spot on and only 2 out of the 4 are affected x
 
I did look at this site before the vet visit and looked very similar! might try rubbing a bit of anti fungal cream on the sore patches to see if it helps. will also carry on with mite treatment too. thanks for your help x
 
Too much too young!

Whilst I do agree that mites and fungal go together and that they may have both; these little babies are only 4 weeks old.

The concentrations in any creams and lotions (be it tea tree which is very harsh....or an anti-fungal cream sold over-the-counter) may be too high for them. Guinea pig skin is very sensitive - it's why they are used in animal testing. Don;t forget they also groom themselves and as a result will ingest some of the topical treatment. Anti-fungals might cause liver damage in ones so young.

Please in this situation do not self-treat in view of their young age...

First of all please stop the tea tree...that could be irritating/sensitising their young skin and contibuting to the problem.

If there is no improvement then ring up the vet and discuss the most appropriate course of action. As the vet has already seen the piggies they may be prepared to suggest something over the phone rather than asking you to bring them in again for another consult (although in ones so young I suspect they would want to re-assess the symptoms before making a decision)

Sorry I hadn't read this :red. It is probably best that you speak with your vet in this case.
 
thanks pebble, will discontinue the tea tree cream. the vet suggested sudocrem but thought the johnsons tea tree cream would be safer! the vet did say to give it 2 weeks but hate seeing my little piggy so itchy and sore :-(

p.s the reason I took them so young was because the place that owned them wasn't caring for them properly - they were in with their siblings in a tiny cage not even suitable for a hamster and receiving no vet care whatsoever!

I can see the logic...and it's a difficult call...(and I will bow to Suzy gpr on this one as she has more experience of sudocream and baby piggies than I do )..but....

Given that I am using sudocream on a very sensitive (and stinky) part of Bandit's anatomy....(and no way do I think he would entertain Johnsons tea tree cream being applied to his manhood :)))...a very fine film of sudocream on the worst areas may help give your little ones some relief (Rub it between your fingers so it melts a bit and becomes easier to put on thinly....might also be worth washing fingers inbetween dips into the pot or you could end up contaminating the pot!)

Well done for taking these little ones out of their horrible situation

Suggest you wait at least 24 hours after last application of tea tree before putting on sudocream to give skin time to recover.
