I'm unsure what to think when it comes to mites. Its to be said that all cavies has mites and they can be dorming in a cavy uptil 22 months. And only ivomec/ivermectin can kill them and only when the cavy is in a break out. But also ive been taught if I have a cavy with mites I should medicate all my cavies. Its a huge thing in small Denmark. But it doesnt make sence to me. If the mites are in the cavies and you cant kill them before a break out...why medicate all in your stabble? Dont you just upper the risk for making the mite resistent to our only weapon ivomec against it.

Hi,
I've never heard it said that mihes can't be eradicated before a break out, certainly in the UK, many guinea owners routinely give Ivomec as a preventative. Again, I've never heard of mites becoming resistant to Ivomec, but I can understand your logic.

I personally do not administer Ivomec routinely as such. I do give it to new guineas who arrive, but only to established ones if they do develop a problem...which thankfully is extremely rare. I, again, personally do not like to give drugs to my animals if I feel they are not needed. But this is just my approach and what works for me and my piggies :)

If I do have a guinea pig in with mites, then I will only routinely treat the ones it has been in contact with. All new guineas are quarantined for 3 weeks.

In mild cases mites may be treated and eradicated with the use of shampoos. The shampoos in themselves are a good preventative. Though with a case of skin mites, Ivomec is always (to me) worth giving.

Have you seen the "Gorgeous Guineas" site in the UK that sells aromatherapy shampoos to help with skin problems?
If you do a search, it is easy to find, or someone will add a link for you :)

Hope this helps and remember these are just my thoughts, I'm sure others will be along with their own!

Those damn mites are a nightmare,I try and forget about whats crawling on my pig when I cuddle it but none of mine have them anyway I dont think as theyve been treated

Its a surden type of mites i am thinking off (here in DK its called Sellnick/Trixacarus caviae) who lives deeply underneath the skin and only ivomec can kill them.

The reason why we believe it cant be killed in hypernation is that totally clean stabbles who have no infections, regularly medicate, keep quarantines and has no source of contamidation still gets sudden outbreaks.

I havent heard either yet of resistance but we are are surely in deep sh*t if that would happend (and how many years can we still use ivomec as a preventor also before they actually DO get resistant). Then we have no weapon against sellnick and they cavies would die and we cant do anything to prevent it.

We discuss this endlessly in DK as some only use on outbreaks-and some use as a preventer to. And the one is scared the other spread sellnick all over,-and the other group is scared the mites develop resistance. I think it is a very important issue and thats why I hope to hear your opinions "overseas" ;)

I have heard that the type of mites thats just in the fur, that lives ON the skin rather than underneath it, is ALWAYS there on a piggy, and does no harm - unless the piggy gets weakened due to illness or stress, then they can start to be a problem.
If the piggy is healthy, then the mites are kept at bay naturally.

So basically every healthy piggy has mites, but only the ones that burrow under the skin are a problem, or the normal ones in the case of a weak piggy.

Is that correct? Its just that I have been told this several times on a german piggy forum :-\
