I have all but two of my boys indoors, the two outside live in a shed in a Ryedale hutch. We spot clean out the boys faithfully every night and do the cleanouts thoroughly of course, even hoovering out the hutches every week but last night I spotted about a dozen tiny moths in the top right hand corner of the hutch. I can't spot any kind of indicator of where they have come from, no cocoons or anything. I wonder if they have managed to crawl into the tiny 2mm space between the hutch roof and the back and made some kind of nest in there :( The only other thing I can think of is that there was some kind of cocoon nest in some hay that I put in there, but I do check the hay I put down in the hutches.

Has anyone else had a prolific moth problem? I went back in earlier today after getting rid of them last night to find another half a dozen of so crawling around. Anyone know if these moths can hurt my boys or do some kind of damage?

I don't know if they will do any damage but could they have come in their food?

I got a piggy a few weeks back and was given a bag of food for the weaning. I put it in my cupboard and a few days later moths started coming out of there (little ones). I have cleaned everything out and thrown away the food and it seems sorted now.

May not be anything like that but thought I would mention just in case.

Hi Julie,

I have had terrible problems in the playroom/guinea pig room with moths. They came from the hay bale I got in. There must have been about 50 all around the room - little tiny ones - just hatched I think.

Some pupae things were on the inside of the black binbag I had the hay in so I definately know they came from the hay...........

I hoovered them up - I had to - they were all over the place - then the next day there were more and more and more and more.

they have gone now I think................

Lisa, ugh, that sounds horrible :( I hope it's not in their food, it's all kept inside. The food bowls are kept in the opposite corner of the hutch to where the moths seem to be focused. So hopefully it's not that, but thanks for the suggestion.

It's pretty gross :(

Helen, that sounds awful. I use a branded hay that you buy online (you probably know the one I mean) do you use them?

I wouldn't of thought they will do any harm :) I don't like moths though :( I think it's just the thought of them flying about that frieks me out :o I don't know how you can keep them out though unless you get something for your garden with those lights that attract them so that they go to that rather than the house your boys are in. I think if you look on a site maybe to do with springwatch/autumnwatch you might find some info as I seem to remember seeing Bill Oddie looking at moths and all the different species :)

Bit coincidental three of us with the little moths. It must be their time of year. Gross. I hope their season is small and they are all gone soon. Not nice.
