It never rains but it pours! Just yesterday i lost a guinea pig, Taylor, he was only a year old, he seemed to have a discharge from his mouth, like puss or drool, so i booked him straight into the vets, he died before i could get him there... I have lost 2 others to this type of thing within 4 weeks of each other (about a year ago), and now tonight i have found 2 more with the same symptons :'( These 2 are no where near the one that died, and it must have only happened in the last 2 days as i noticed they were off their food, but i thought it was just them having an off day or 2, but they were still eating. So my questions are am i cursed?! What could this be, what can i do to prevent it, and finally am i just a bad mother to them? should i have noticed before? Please tell me it is not my fault :(

Awwww you poor love! I am ever so sorry to hear this. It is DEFINITELY NOT your fault!

Was there any reason found why Taylor was dribbling? Problems with teeth/tongue and/or mouth abscess?

Hi,This is not your fault, piggies get sick even with the best of care.

Do you live in a hot country because heatstroke can cause pytialism and so can vitimin c deficiency. If this was just one pig I would say have the teeth thoroughly checked,or it could be a blocked salivary gland. So many pigs though point to a possible virus or bacterial infection. It is strange though that your piggies have been o.k.since the ones you lost a year ago. This is what made me think heatstroke if the other piggies died at the same time of year.Did you see a vet last year,if so,what was the diognosis?.I think you should maybe, get a vet to see the sick piggies you have now and have mouth swabs and bloods taken because you need to find out what is going on here. Paws crossed and good vibes for you all.Mary

Well thanks for you replies, i went to the vets on saturday, it was as soon as i could get an appointment. I had to have one of the sick ones pts, he was have passed that day anyway. The vet said it was a very bad infection, and it wasn't my fault, i just feel so bad, 2 pigs in 4 days :'( Taylor didn't get to the vets, he passed away before his appointment, and i didn't take him for examination afterwards, because of the 2 last year i knew what it was. I keep a good eye on their teeth, so i doubt it was that. The remaining guineas that were with the sick ones are being treated with baytril, and going back to the vets on fri for a check up so wish me luck!

i wish u all the luck possible............what is the infection they have ? it's really not your fault and you can only do your best. so sorry for your loss.

Chest/URI unfortunately :( I just hope i have caught the other ill one in time and i hope the 2 healthy ones that lived with the sick ones never develop it!

have you separated the ill one ? keep it warm and if needed give it some water, cucumber and celery. extra vit c to build them all up.

are they inside? sorry for so many questions but i had 2 that had pneumonia and glad to say they are both still here but were caged separately. even build the poorly one up with some syringe food. just ideas, do they like strawberries and broccoli, good for vit c, not to many strawberries tho ;) get sore lips
