My auction cake for the TEAS sanctuary event in Northampton today!

Here is my cake stall this afternoon with all the chocolate cakes safely in the shade:

For those that are interested from left to right:
Lemon drizzle loaf with poppy seed; my granny's quark cheesecake with lemon and blackberries this time; traditional Swiss carrot cake, German apple and rosemary cake (new but really tasty and nicely moist); German sunken berries cake with crisp streusel topping.

Traditional Black Forest gateau my own village way; the family chocolate cage with melted chocolate, ground almonds and a hint of kirsch; orange and chocolate sponge cake (which is actually both vegan and gluten-free but you'd never know); vanilla and chocolate piggy biscuits; 'death by melted Swiss chocolate' triple chocolate gugelhopf, which is a firm favourite with chocaholics and lastly gingerbread guinea pigs. I've made my own cutters from some leftover for sale Christmas themed ones and a pair of pliers.

Wow they look amazing

They look professional! Have you been baking a long time?

My mother is an excellent baker so there was a lot of baking when I was growing up. I only started more seriously when away from fierce family competition and in possession of an appreciative cake loving hub; but that is now nearly two decades. I did bake my own wedding cake (the family chocolate cake), by the way!

I have been baking regularly for rescue and sanctuary fundraisers for quite a few years now. I found that baking tasty cakes and Christmas biscuits that you cannot buy in this country gives me an excellent selling angle and I am never in direct competition with anyone. ;)
My cakes and biscuits should look good enough to tempt people to buy but they still need to look home baked and not have that professional perfection. If I bake a cake, it doesn't matter whether it is simple or more complicated, as long as it tastes great and is pleasurable to eat!

You pick up new techniques by trying out new recipes along the way and, as usual, you generally learn a lot from things that go wrong.

We had some of your cakes with our dinner this evening, they are as yummy as ever. I enjoyed a sliver of the lemon and blackberry cheesecake, my hubby is of the opinion that your Swiss family chocolate cake is probably the best he's ever tasted, and even my younger son who is fussy and doesn't like dark chocolate, enjoyed it too.
