OK, I've admittedly had a bit too much time on my hands!

Since the new virus is not just one wave and a short sprint but a marathon until everybody has either had it or enough people are vaccinated to help achieve herd immunity (not likely to happen this side of Christmas), this got me thinking - can I climb my stairs at home often enough to celebrate the end of the year by reaching the equivalent of the summit of Mount Everest?

Turns out that I'd need to climb our 13 steps staircase 4467 times or, more evenly spread out, climbing our stair 17 times every remaining day of the year and do 18 laps on every third day. I am trying to do that as my daily fitness challenge in hopefully just one go to get my pulse going once I am fitter (not just in two sessions as I have to do it now); not just all my normal daily up and down.

Who of you would be willing to join me in climbing Mount Everest at home to celebrate the end of this year on top of the world?

And who would be willing to sponsor me on my fitness challenge on behalf of TEAS sanctuary to help pay their ongoing high vet bills while all their normal sources of income have suddenly collapsed?

I was thinking of a similar but less challenging task of climbing the equivalent of a lake district mountain....or several if this goes on for a while! I couldn't work out how many times I'd have to go up my stairs. I have 15 steps in my staircase.

We could use this thread to keep track and help each other to stick to our personal climbing challenge; that is what I thought. ;)
And also do it as a charity fundraiser. I could do with losing about half a stone I've piled on in the last couple of months anyway but as I am not good during hot weather I can't do anything takes me outside for exercise during heatwaves.
 
Well, I thought I'd start with the highest lake district mountain, Scafell Pike which is 978m or 326 laps of my stairs. I aim to do 15 laps a day, so should be done in 22ish days. I can then move onto another one.

I am trying to work my way up through the mountains as well... It gives you a bit more of an incentive and a sense of pride!
 
I wasn't going to do all 15 laps in one go but it makes sense to do it that way to improve fitness. I still plan to go for a daily walk as well.

At the moment, I can do about 10 stair laps in one go but then I need to rest, so I am doing them in two sessions. I need to find 18 things to put in a bowl at the top of the steps so I can take out one more with each lap... Makes counting a lot easier!
 
I've dusted off the static bike I inherited, which has apparently been on loan from my Aunt since Jane Fonda sold out and went into exercise videos (I remember having to do those, always seemed to involve balancing against a wall upside down with a smile). The seat is as uncomfortable as I remember from the last time I used it in 2009, and I do hate exercising indoors, but it's good enough, and despite being older than me, no-one appears to have ever been able to wear it out.
 
Nothing wrong with virtual running. Where/what were you planning to run?

:) I was feeling a bit lonely in my running, which I started off from couch25K a few years ago, earlier this year, then it struck me that we could start a virtual running club, as we've got a lot of members which are into running and several other sports and plenty who would like to - then the virus happened XD.

Well that was harder than I thought! Had to do 3x5 times because I was struggling, but I was going at a pace. I am sooo unfit. Can't believe it's only 4 weeks since I stopped going to the gym, but never did anything too energetic.

I'm glad you suggested this @Wiebke, I obviously need the exercise!

Anyway, first 45m completed.

I think we all have to set our personal challenges depending on our options at home and our own physical fitness (mine is not great).
Just try for something that is at the upper limit of what you can realistically achieve by plugging away daily and work up to it - whether that is sit-ups, or other exercises, walking, running, cycling or stair climbing.

I spend an hour 1st thing in the morning, in my spa doing aqua aerobic exercise. Without this l cannot move. Have upped this by 10 minute. 😅
 
In order to set yourself an attainable goal try to multiply your daily distance by the number of days remaining in the year (today that is 257) and look for target that is roughly in that ball park, perhaps just a little bit further - whether that is walking from Land's End to John o' Groats, cycling round the UK or somewhere else in the world or climbing all the highest peaks in the UK.

I just had the idea of climbing Mount Everest and worked out that it is perfectly within my reach if I keep plugging away at it daily. But it is a good incentive to keep you going...

Anyway, I have done today's lot now. Here is a picture of my improvised lap counter on top of the laundry basket on the landing halfway through. I just place a book from the stack at the back at the front. There are 18 books that can be just pushed back again for the next day... Easy to grab even when you are tired and puffing!

I am still going fine, thanks! Able to do more stairs at a jog now and being less puffy afterwards.
70 stairs climbed to far; that means I've climbed just over 600 ft (185 m) and am already nearly a third up on Bodmin Moor and double the height above sea level to Coventry!

But I have measured the exact height of our staircase and worked out that I only need to jog up 13 times a day as it is a rather steeper and higher one than the average I based my initial computation on. I may still do more steps in a day and see whether I can bag some extra mountains in addition. It should get easier as I get fitter and my legs stronger.
