I’m sorry I’m from a foreign country and there is little to no one that knows what even a guinea pig is , and no the male isn’t neutered , so I have to separate them?
Yes, please separate asap and keep them in adjoining cages so they can interact safely through the bars! It is highly likely that your sow is already pregnant, but you have to sit that out with a 10 weeks pregnancy watch.
We have got a pregnancy section with plenty of information for forum members who are confronted with an unplanned pregnancy from already pregnant sows or mis-sexed guinea pigs; our guides cover the whole period with practical information that has been specifically written for owners with no experience.
We do support any members that consent to stop breeding and concentrate on the welfare of their guinea pigs. If you are willing to do that, you are welcome to open an ongoing support thread in our pregnancy section for information and and ongoing support during the whole period. We are also going to help you work out what the best solution for you is.
Firstly, however, it is VERY important that you double-check the gender of your piggies! Sows will mount other sows as boars will mount boars, so mounting is not a reliable way of sexing a guinea pig. if you are lucky, they are the same gender. How old are they, how long have you had them and have they been together in the same cage before you bought them?
Since we have members from all over the world, we find it very helpful if you please add your country, US/Aus state, Can province or UK county to your details so we can always tailor any advice to what is relevant and available where you are. Please click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. This makes it appear with every post you make and saves everybody time. Our default is UK conditions, as that is where we are based.
Whether boar neutering is a viable option for instance depends on how good your access to piggy savvy vets or vets with experience in small furries operations is; that can differ widely around the world and even within a country. It can also be a very expensive operation in some countries like the US or Canada.
