NocturnalRapport

My friend's 10 year old daughter decided she wanted a guinea pig for her birthday. My friend bought her an 8 week old girl.

I feel so sorry for this piggie :... the poor thing is kept in a hutch completely alone 24/7. She has no other guinea pigs to socialise with. The girl has now got bored of her so never bothers with her either ...

So basically this poor little thing is kept in a hutch on it's own, 24/7 with no contact with other guinea pigs, a very minimal ammount of contact with humans (they do what they have to do to keep her alive basically) and that's it 8... no garden time, no carpet time, sometimes no hay .... just left in the shed, in a hutch, on it's own 24/7 :(

I have suggested to my partner that we offer her £30-£50 for the pig, just to get it with us and give it a better life and he thinks I'm being silly offering so much. The money doesn't matter to me, I just want the pig. Does anyone understand? :(

i do understand, but you don't want to pay for the guineapig and give them the idea that piggies are money makers because they could then start breeding,
I would make subtle hints about your own piggy being lonely and needing a friend, they may just offer the sow to you without further problems.
or
offer to take the sow and give thema small amount for the hutch, even if you dont use the hutch,it will still give them some incentive to rehome her because of a little money but you won't be directly paying for the guinea pig, they would still be out of pocket which should deter them from buying another in the future,
i hope it all works out keep us posted on how you go xxxxxx

I agree with PLEASEHELPSAVEBORIS, I would just nicely offer to take the piggie from them as a companion for your own and offer some money for the hutch and see what they say. The poor piggie :(

Bonnie gave some brilliant advice, couldn't have put it better myself. The fact that neither the child nor the parents are bothering with the pig is obvious that the poor little sow is a "burden" on their family and their routine, they haven't the time or the inclination for her. It depends on how strong their principles are on how easily they will give her up, but I hope for her sake (and for yours!) that they do let her go to you.

Oh gosh......i too would off to take piggie off there hands and maybe pay for the hutch........poor little one he's got no chance with those careless people ...enough said :x

well said everyone i thought you gave wonderful advice xx>>>

Yeah pay for the hutch, even if you smash it up, if you leave it they'll onlybe tempted to fill it again.

thats is rather funny but i wouldnt advise smashing it,there are plenty of rescues that would love an extra temp cage/hutch x

Actually I run a rescue for rabbits and I have never picked up a correct size hutch from one of the rabbits I have removed from a home. Assuming these people are not looking after the pig correctly then I doubt the hutch is going to be a correct size. A pig could be sitting in a rescue for months and really rescues should be using correct size hutches and cages. As I said I run a rescue and people sometimes ring me offering me a hutch etc, they turn up and it's too small, so I end up smashing it up anyway and just reusing the hinges etc, it ends up being a waste of my time and theirs. I have been to rescues that use many unsuitable size hutches, they tend to be the rescues that don't know their limits and have hutch on top of hutch.

So I personally wouldn't love anything donated that wasn't RSPCA size specification and most people would not donate something that size, they sell it to line their own pockets. As I say if it isn't a good size, smash it up and get them out of circulation.

ETA obviously if it's a good hutch, reuse it hehe

i did say temp hutch, many rescues need them for a day or two while they organise something bigger, its just a waste when it could have a use, even if its only for short periods of time xxxxx

Yes, please, make a go for the poor girl!

My two new girls are bored children's minimally handled pets, and it's amazing how they have turned around in just two months with some tlc first from the foster carers and now me!

I disagree, I am afraid. If a rescue hasn't got room to provide the right size accommodation from the start, they shouldn't be taking in any extra animals in. I keep a spare lavender lodge with attached run for rabbits that could be put to sleep etc, this is used in "urgent situations" other than that that rescues (in my opinion) should operate a waiting list, rather than "get them in and pile them up" attitude.

(but as I say though, this is just my opinion :))

well i guess some animals can't wait on a waiting list if they don't have time, and nearly every rescue i know at some point is over loaded,in order to save more than a few animals they don't have the choice, anyway I'm going to stop hijacking the OP thread xxxxxx
Forgot to add that i am a dog rescuer myself so i know what its like to be overloaded and its not ideal but i think its better to be a little crowded for a short amount of time rather than having beautiful animals suffer in current conditions or getting PTS x

I agree with others here. Please do try and give this piggy a better home. Just say that you are looking for a companion for your existing piggies and would happily adopt theirs. Offer a little money for the hutch and see what they say. To be honest, if the lille girl doesn't bother with the piggy anymore, the parents will probably be pleased to know longer have the responsibility. Good luck xx

Yep, I know a few particularly bad rescues that pile them up and as a rule those animals end up having to be then saved from that rescue, after it then becomes part of the problem rolleyes. Some rescues don't know their own limitations. It's easy to be a try and be a hero and save as many animals as possible, but I have more respect for a rescue that provides a decent standard of care.

Like I say I run a rescue myself and would not appreciate some rubbish undersized hutch. The hutch could be massive for all we know and we're debating over nothing :))

Sorry to the OP, but yeah as long as you can afford any possible emergency vet bills, offer to take on piggie and remove the hutch to stop them filling it again. ;)

sorry, but could you two stop arguing?! this thread is about a little, lonely guinea pig, NOT what to do with the cage! You both have offered valued comments and solutions, please agree to disagree!

Back to the subject in question (My friend's guinea pig :-(.),I suggest offering the piggie a home with your piggies and say to the current owners how a piggie benefits from company, suggest they come and see her when they want and its ok for you. they may be thankful for the offer. xxxxxxxxxxxxx

You altered your post before I had chance to respond, I am taitally not sure which bit of "I don't agree with you" you're not understanding

Sorry, it's a debate we're not arguing if I was arguing you would know about it!

Everyone has suggested that she takes on the pig, we're not allowed to divert from topic over welfare issues, because.......?

because we will never agree thats why we should just drop the subject, and try not to disrespect the topic of this thread anymore xxxxx

because you're sounding like an argument! this thread is not placed in the housing section, and it's not called "we're going to offer this piggie a new home, what to do with the hutch?!". I must say your posts are sounding a little argumentative and I dont care for arguments. I just want OP to get the help they were after! Its obvious that the hutch should be taken from the scene, but we're not debating on how to use it!

I agree we wont ever agree, it was you who was telling me I was wrong for the smashing up the hutch up comment, not the other way around ;), if you want to disagree with me that is fine, but I will come back with my reason for my view.

Anyway, I said my bit -c

rolleyesrolleyesrolleyes

hehe,i was joking,hoping you'd take it as such. :)p:)p:)p:)p

Yeah totally.

I think the way I type gets taken wrong sometimes, I didn't mean to upset anyone if I did, I certainly wasn't trying to be horrid. I think I have rather a black and white view on things, but do appreciate people think differently to me. I think you're all fab on here and honestly I am sorry if I upset anyone.

Going back to the original question after the subsequent misunderstandings (happens all the time talking with text, try not to worry about it :) ) I would definately NOT offer cash for the piggie, rather offer a token £20 or whatever for the hutch so they have to start from scratch if they want to go down that road again. They will probably jump at the chance as the poor pig is clearly a "burden" for them and will be glad to hand her over, but I would recommend against saying how you feel about their neglect of her as this will put their backs up!
