This is Petal, some of you might have seen my threads about her bladder problems over in Health & Illness. She is still going, despite treatment over the last 3 years, various ops including a bladder flush, x-rays, ultrasounds & eventually a full hysterectomy last October. In total I have spent the sum of a small car of her, the ops, x rays & scans alone have cost about £2000 plus medications on top. Unfortunately we didn't have her insured, so it has been an expensive learning curve (Please get yours insured lol) Petal.webp

She (and they) are absolutely beautiful and you are exactly the type of person who restores my faith in humans

May she continue to love you as much as you obviously love her :luv:

Awwwww thank you :hug:She is very special. The vet nurses & receptionists all adore her & she is quite famous :) She revels in the limelight lol :D Yes I could have had a new car or tons of new clothes, even several holidays but when I see them together I know I have done the right thing

that is a moving story , great to see people treeting a pig the same as a cat or dog

well done

Thank you! I did get someone with a chinchilla at the vets say she wouldn't spend that much on just a guinea pig :( I was surprised as I thought she would have been sympathetic but apparently chinchillas are worth treating because they "Live longer" :( We had a horrible 8-9 weeks after her operation & nearly lost her as she wouldn't eat very well afterwards & I had to syringe feed through the night & day for about 8 weeks & it was very tiring plus working too. But how could I not save her when she looks at me like this :) Oh & I forgot to add, I basically work to pay my vet bills, there have been some weeks I have basically worked for nothing as every penny went to the vets lol :)

l have a lot of pigs and l am always at my vets , sometims twice a week
this year i have seen just one pet keeper with a guinia pig .

It would kill me to get 16 pigs insured! :yikes:
This is often one of the main things that is on my list for reasons to not expand my piggy family. I'd love to take on another pair, theres a particular duo at the moment I would do many things to be able to have, but I couldn't afford another £24 per month for insurance, and I couldn't afford to have them both get seriously ill in the same year like what happened to Tango and Cash pre insurance as that was a financial nightmare we barely survived. Its a real toss up!

Can I ask where you get them insured please? Closest i've been able to find is rabbit insurance.

She's so cute and snuggly . Like the comments above, vet's bills are the reason I haven't expanded my piggie family (as well as boarding fees as I work away lots).

I suspect we've all had some pretty big bills, and people saying it's not worth spending it on a guinea pig. My first piggie had an ongoing condition and lived to 8. Towards the end of her life I looked at the vet's computer screen and saw that they kept a total treatment cost throughout her life; it was pretty shocking!

Yes I've only got 3, the younger 2 are insured though, but with the amount I've spent I really can't afford another pair :( It's not only that but very stressful when they are so ill. At the moment she is being maintained by daily doses of Metacam for her bladder sludge & monthly Cartrophen injections & to be honest I think she has arthritis in her back legs as well, but she is eating for England, cuddles up with the other two (One is unrelated) & the vet & I feel she has a great quality of life. If that changes then I know I need to make some awful decisions but I really do feel she has had at least an extra year so far & possibly more as another owner might not have been as willing or able to spend such a large sum on such a small animal. I can now tell if she is having some bladder pain, if her ears are lower on her head she looks a little bit sad & I pick up on that very quickly so I up her pain relief for a few days. I dipstick her urine regularly & some days she will have a small amount of blood present but if her protein levels are ok we just carry on what we are doing.

We can't get pet insurance for anything but cats & dogs over here in OZ but that did not stop me from paying thousands of Aussie dollars for Peanut Butter's monthly dental treatments from the time he was 2 months old & his problem was discovered. Poor boy has also had a 3month UTI & a 5 month illness with benign prostatic hyperplasia, ruptured semen tube, subsequent abscess post neutering & full of fungus as a result of too many anti-biotics making too much room for fungal growth. But like you I do not regret any part of it. My little boy is turning 5 years old in mid-August, is healthy & happy. This is exactly how people should behave towards their pets, regardless of the type, else why even bother having one. The lady with the chinchilla is not someone I would admire! Who cares how long they live so long as they live well!
