Hello,

My guinea pig caught URI this week (on Wednesday), well we're not sure when she caught it but we noticed her symptoms on Wednesday, we got to the vet on Thursday morning to be given septrin, and an injection as Sugar the piggy stopped eating Wednesday night, so this was to help get her guts moving. The vet said to give her the septrin twice a day with some recovery food, she didn't mention this but because Sugar was on antibitocs I decided to give her water with probitoics in as I know what antibitocs can do to pigs..

By this point I constantly kept hand feeding her and giving her water every hour, she was eating this but not wanting to eat herself, she was passing poos but not a lot and she just wanted to sit down a lot.
Friday came, she was pooing less, looked more lethargic, by this point I had a gut feeling she was going to die, but carried on with feeding her and giving her meds/water. Her breathing was very labourer but she was trying so hard.
By Friday evening, I was giving her evening medication on my lap when suddenly she started fitting, her eyes rolled back and she went on her side with her legs sprawled out. She was so floppy and was gasping for air (like how a fish does when it's not in water). I kept talking to her and said to her how much I love her and to relax herself (as she was panicking that she couldn't breathe anymore). She then passed away in my arms. I'm so devasted as I had her for 6 years and she was the best pig in the world..could she have died of a heart attack by this point being as she was trying to fight URI? She was 6 years old so pretty oldish for a pig. I haven't stopped crying since Friday :'(

I'm so sorry to hear this. I know this is devastating for you - but please take some comfort in the fact you were with her and were able to give her some comfort in her time of need.

I'm afraid the pain of their loss is the price we pay for loving them so much.

I'm so sorry to hear this. It is possible that her heart stopped, and that this would have happened regardless of the URI. Or it could have been a complication resulting from the URI. Either way, you did absolutely everything for her. I'm sure she would have felt comforted that she was in your arms, and would have known that she was safe to pass away peacefully.

You would be very welcome to post a tribute to her in our Rainbow Bridge forum x

HUGS

I am very sorry for your loss. I agree with @Jerrybelly. It is hard to say exactly what caused the heart to stop. It could be that the stress of the illness/the strain of struggling to breathe could have simply been too much for a frail heart. Or that the URI symptoms were caused by her already having problems with a failing heart. In any way, I sincerely doubt that it makes any difference to the ultimate outcome and there is anything that could have been done to change it - sadly. :(

There isn't anything that you did wrong and you have NOT failed your old girl. It is very normal for us when a beloved pet goes downhill so quickly and rather unexpectedly that we have a desperate urge to make sense of what has happened and that we are plagued by feelings of guilt or having in any way let down the pet in our care. It tells you what a responsible and caring owner you are. Grieving is the other side of the same coin to our unconditional love. We have to grieve as much as we have loved, irrespective of the species. Your feelings are par for the onset of the grieving process.

Sugar lived to a very good old age and has been well loved and cared for. You are welcome to post a tribute for your beloved girl in our Rainbow Bridge section any time it feels right. We all grieve differently, if no less.

Sending huge hugs your way. I am so sorry for your loss. You're in my thoughts xx

So sorry for your loss. I'm sure you gave your piggy a wonderful life and you did everything you could for her at the end x

Thank you everyone for your kind messages, Sugar was well and truly a spoilt little princess along side her sister Spice who passed away back in the summer last year. Atleast they are both together running free eating all the food they want . Just so hard to even believe that she went, atleast she is in peace and in no more pain

So sorry for your loss. You obviously loved your fur baby and did the best you could. Popcorn free little one x

I'm really sorry for your loss. It sounds as though you did absolutely everything you could. Sometimes, even with the best medical care, they just don't pull through. Six is a good age for a pig... we recently lost our oldest girl at age six as well, in spite of getting medical help and trying to nurse her through. It was heartbreaking, so I completely feel your pain. ((HUGS)) to you!

oh I am so very sorry for your loss, it sounds like you acted as quickly as you could and did everything you could for her. I am truly sorry.
