gerty guinea pig

Hi!
I am new to this and just looking for some help/advice, When i went to clean my guinea pigs out this morning i found Flower had really runny poo! :( so I brought her indoors to keep an eye on her, we had to pop out for a little while and when i came back she is now bleeding, i have spoken to the Cavy trust and they have advised that she should be ok tonight but to take her to them in cambridge tomorrow but thats a long way away from me and i cant because of work. I can book her into the vet for a first thing appointment but i am worried about leaving her over night and really dont know what is wrong with her, she is about 18months old but i have only had her for a month - i know she has had babies in the past but to my knowledge she isnt pregnant now.....any help or advise would be greatly received as i am really worried about her :'( :'(. Thanks

one of my sows cookie was bleeding a month back or so, what colour is the blood? light? pale? dark? and is it dripping or heavier? cookie was fine for the night untill i got her to vets next morning, she was on probiotic and it all cleared up, luckly it seems it was just a cut.

try not to panic somebody will have some advice :)

Hello,

Is her poo runny now? Is the blood light red or very dark? and is she eating or lost any weight?

Hope she gets better!

Charlene.

Good luck, I'm sure your girlie will be fine, you were very quick to seek out expert advice from the cavy trust.
*hugs*

welcome to the forums from me and the girls from oz. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: when my girl zoe had soft poops and was bleeding-dark and bubbly, after much vet mucking around she had surgery to remove her reproductive organs as her ovaries were cystic and she had a mass growing on the outside of her uterus. zoe still has the soft poops but this is due to an upset tummy with all the drugs used and because of her hormones.
to answer your question, bleeding could mean a lot of things, depending on how much she is losing, whether she is eating, bright in herself, and how runny her poops are. some guinea pigs can go downhill very quickily and it depends on what your girl has wrong with her. if you can't get her to the vet today, keep her warm, and offer pre boiled water. if she is not eating offer her critical care via syringe or mashed pellets in water via plastic spoon. hoping your little flower gets better,. sending you hugs and cuddles. keep and eye on her. hoping all goes well. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

hi
Her poo seems fine now, but she is still bleeding the blood is bright red it looks like lots but i dont know if thats just because the woodchip is making it look like that. when i first got her a month ago she wasnt very fat but she has been getting bigger and bigger, i even e-mailed the lady i got her from to ask if she could be pregnant but she assurred me she wasnt, this morning her tummy looked really big and bloated but i think it has gone down a bit now.

She is eating fine and doesnt look like she is in any pain

Hi,

I have a sow she bleeds roughly once a month, this happens when she comes into season, this could be the case here, as you say the blood is light. Her tummy my well be bloated at times due this. I am not a vet but I doubt you have anything to worry about, as you say the poo is fine now too. If the poo becomes runny again, this usually is bad in guinea pigs but if not I think she is fine. Is she eating and going about her usual, nothing else odd? But since your unsure, go ahead with the vets, just to be on the safe side.

All the best,

Charlene.

Guinea pigs don't have periods so they shouldn't bleed at all. They are so lucky!

Any sign of blood I would get to a vet, it isn't right at all.

Hope she is ok,

Louise

Guinea pigs dont have periods however they can (very unlikely) pass a lil bit of blood when in season, but this is not regular :)

yeah i agree with graham she needs to see a vet asap, if you cant get her to vets tonight, keep a close eye on her :)

If you ring your vet they may have an emergency number to ring, if not try the PDSA.

Thanks For all the advise,
bless her she is asleep at the moment, i am going to call the vets and see if they want to see her tonight if not i will be banging on their door at 8am tomorrow.

i just really hope she is ok i havent had her long and she wasnt in the best shape when i got her. I have got really attached to her really quickly! :'(

The guinea pig I talk of is really healthy and full of life, she is highly sexed at times and this is when she leaves little dots of blood. I have read up on it and it can happen, but not like us ladies. She has also been to the vets a while ago and she has a full bill of health, all she has is fatty eye which is not very big. I have been to the pdsa twice and found them not very good when it comes to piggies. I really would suggest you find a vet with good experience with pigs, if you find your consultation unhelpful.

I have been thinking and a strong possibility could be worms. But I am sure the vet will know more.

hello was just wondering how flower is today? did she behave at the vet? hoping all is well with her, have been thinking of her all day! sending you both hugs and cuddles from me and the girls. :-* :-* :-* :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Hi everyone

Flower is getting a little better she has been to the vet who thinks she has a bacterial infection, her bleeding stopped yesterday morning - thank goodness :) and her poo is starting to look better!

She is taking her meds ok but really doesnt want to eat, the vet has said to keep her off fresh food but she isnt eating anything at all, i have some critical care powder and if she goes on for much longer i may try and give her some just too bost her strength up.

Thanks everyone for your help and advise on sunday night it was good to have people to talk to! :smitten: :smitten:

Hello, glad to hear Flower is doing a bit better.
What meds is she on?

You will need to give her some critical care if she isn't eating - how long is it since she last ate?
Have you got access to grass? Sometimes thats all mine will eat when they are poorly.

Fingers crossed for Flower! Let us know how she gets on.

Hi
she is having fibreplex 3 times a day - its a probiotic.

I have some graze on which is chopped dry grass i might try her on that just dont want to upest her tummy again, she is sleeping alot now and not very active, she just doesnt seem to have any energy.

I'm going to mix up some critical care to try and boost her up a little

She is probably inactive because of lack of food.Gps are grazers and cannot go long without eating. You must syringe feed her to keep her digestive system going. When I syringe feed I grind up some dry mix in a xoffee grinder to a fine powder, mix with warm water and a teaspoonful or 2 of CC.You need to give at least 25 mls per day if she is not eating at all..Pureed veg will go down well.I usae the small jars of baby puree. The potata and carrot is good.

Give her plenty of water by syringe as well because she may be dehydrated. In fact,as she is lethargic you could make up a satchet of Diarlyite or similar and give it little and often through the day.

Hope she will be o.k.

glad to hear flower is doing better :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: hoping that she will pick up soon and start eating for you and start running around again. hugs and cuddles to you and flower and know we're thinking of you both. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Glad she is doing well, Recovery Rabbit power is great for a boost, you mix that with warm water and syringe feed her. Or even soggy weetabix work wonders. Make sure you syringe feed her some water too. My piggies always eat cucumber, its soft and smells good!

Take care,

Charlene.

Hi everyone

Not so good news from this end, flower has taken a turn for the worst, i am desperatly trying to get liquid and food into her but nothing i do seems to be enough she is just laying in her bed and shaking :'( :'(, i keep feeding her every couple of hours to try and get her strength up but i dont know if there is something horrible going on inside, the vets have said just to keep pushing the critical care into her and they can look at her more when her strength is up :'( :'( :'( i will keep you posted, i just really hope she gets better :'(

that seems strange to me if flower is shaking and not eating and yet the vet won't see her till her strength is up. >:( is your vet piggy savy? really hoping your baby gets better real soon. sending hugs and cuddles to you and flower. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: where abouts do you live? maybe others will know of a vet near you. good luck.

oh gosh poor little thing :( does she seem cold, i'm thinking this could be why she's shaking. :-\ she may have a temperature :(
yeah just keep getting the CC and water into her. are you giving any rehydration solution? (dioralyte etc) this may help to get her re-hydrated O0 try and feed her maybe every hour? i know it's hard work, but it would be worth it if it got her better O0
are there no emergency vets near you? you mentioned the Cambrigeshire cavy trust. are you a member? Could you phone them?
I really think she needs to get some specialist vetrinary care :-\ (((hugs))) i know it's so worrying :smitten:

I agree with the others. It sounds like an emergency and sounds silly for a vet not to see her until "her strength is up". If you are having issues getting food into her then they should be offering to do that for you. I would find another vet absolutely as soon as possible - was fibreplex the only thing they gave you? How much CC are you getting into her?

Certainly go to another vet and explain whats happen thus so far and say she is not well at all. Is her fur puffed up too? is she in a corner. Does seem strange how she has declined so fast. Is she passing poo still? does she make any noises at all? what she like when you pick her up? Are her eyes ok? bright no weeping? I know top up feed like your giving her does not contain things like vit c, but I cannot explain the shaking! Sorry for all the questions, just trying to help.

Hope you get this resolved asap.

Good luck!

Maybe ring your vet and see if they have an emergency number. Where abouts are you?
