Hi

Looking for advice please!

Our 1 year old guinea pig has today, out of the blue, stopped using one of her back legs. She does not seem to be in any pain with it, I have felt her leg, moved it, rotated it gently etc and no protest or squeaking from her. She is eating and drinking absolutely fine but when walking is now hopping almost as she won't put weight on this leg.

I think you should phone your vet for advice. It's sunday, so they're likely to be closed, if you're unsure how to contact them, you may find this link helpful http://theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=90842

Pigs are notoriously good at hiding pain. Restrict her movement if you can (no floor time until you've sought veterinary advice, keep her in her cage), try not to poke and play with it too much. One indicator of pain is that they may go off their food, so keep an eye on what's going in at that end, and coming out the other end.

Is she still putting weight on it? Have you felt the leg right up to the shoulder/hip joint?

Please see a vet if necessary; hopefully, it is just a sprain.

Thanks for your replys

She won't put weight on it, almost hops to get around. We took her just now to our friend who is a vet nurse, she thinks a sprain. She had a good feel of her leg and says it has normal reflexes etc, she does not seem in pain as such, seemed fine having it rotated around but slightly squeaked when she pushed her leg up. She is happy and eating so advise is rest but will take her to Vet if no improvement.

If she is continuing to not weight bare on it then i would get her to the vet for some pain relief at the very least. When animals don't weight bare on there legs it usually indicates a serious sprain, dislocation or fracture. It would be better to have your piggie seen to be properly assessed by a vet. I'm a vet nurse and i wouldnt want to leave my pig not weight baring on a leg regardless if i could or couldn't feel any malformations or swellings, I'm not a vet so i'd rather them seen by one for a diagnoses. Sorry.

x.
