So Hugo is about 6 months old and he developed a URI in June (about 2 months ago). We took him straight to the vet and he was put on baytril for a week. He then started to sneeze again a few days later so the vet put him on another 7 day course of baytril but that still did not clear it. The vets took a swab of his nose and said the best antibiotic would be septrin so he was put on a 2 week course of 0.1ml (paed) twice a day. After researching, I thought that 0.1ml of septrin paediatric was very low so I decided to give him 0.3ml twice a day (I still don't know if that is too low). He weighs just under 1kg. He is due to finish his two week course tomorrow but is still sneezing so I don't know what to do. Can I keep him
On the septrin for longer than two weeks and can I put the dosage up higher? Thanks in advance for your help!

I answered on your other thread last night. You need to speak to the vet about increasing the dose and keeping him on it for longer. I also suggested asking for Bisolvon to help clear any mucous.

I agree with Helen105281's advice. It may also be wise to check out different types of bedding. Fitch, vetbed, fleece are all favorites on here. I use shredded paper with hay. If your Hugo is on woodchips/shavings or sawdust they can all cause problems with breathing due to the chemicals released from the wood when it gets damp/urinated on. Also sawdust isn't recommended due to the fineness of it getting in eyes &the dust causing problems.
I'm just wondering if there is a irritant in the air or an allergy is delaying the recovery.

I see it mentions another thread. Please try &keep each piggies problem on its own thread. People dont have to trawl through various threads to find out relevant info to give advice.

Also which country or county do you come from as this can make a difference to the advice given. If go into the settings on your toolbar at the top this can be added. The climate these little furballs are kept in can make a big difference too.
If outdoor pigs might be worth bringing them in to keep warm &comfy.

Welcome to the forum &speedy recovery to Hugo.
Healing vibes from the girls &I. Xx
Ps if your piggies are the ones from your avatar-they are lovely :)

Hello,
Thank you for the replies.

I have two guinea pigs (Milan and Hugo), both unfortunately do not get along and therefore are kept in seperate cages but pushed together. We live in the UK and they are both kept inside and have fleece bedding.

My partner has told me I cannot have any more guinea pigs after these because of how much i worry about them (I even phoned into work sick when I thought little Hugo was very ill). They are only about 6 months old but have had countless problems in the short time that we have had them. When we bought Hugo, he had a UTI and bite wounds from another guinea pig which then turned into abcesses. Now he has this URI. Milan has a spinal problem which means he has had a lot of X-rays etc and even a barium study then he caught the URI from Hugo but seems (fingers crossed) to be better.

Anyway, every time I take them to the vets, they tell me that their chest/lungs sound clear and that I can stop the antibiotics, but then they start sneezing again. After reading on here that URI's can cause fluid on the lungs, I am really worried that this is the case so I asked the vet for an X-ray but he would not do one as the lungs sound clear. I have now been advised to keep Hugo on septrin for another week but higher the dose from 0.1ml twice a day to 0.6ml once a day. What do you think about this?

Thank you!

P.S these guinea pigs mean the world to me and I am doing everything I can

Also it might be significant to mention that I went on holiday and my mum minded Hugo. I did not even think until afterwards but the room he stayed in is damp and has some mould. The door had to be closed at all times as my mum has cats. Could this have caused Hugos URI? He started to sneeze after this and now I feel awful about it

It is possible that it has affected his breathing somehow, he may even have some fungal spores on his lungs but it is difficult to say.

I agree with the vet on the increase of Septrin, however, if you are worried about fluid I would ask them to listen again. If he sounds like he is underwater then there is fluid. It doesn't have to be crackly or rattling. I would also ask for Bisolvon to help clear any mucous.

Is there another vet you can see? have you checked our recommended vets locator?

I have not seen the vet recommender. Where can I find this? You say about the fungal spores, but the swab showed a bacterial infection so is it unlikely to be fungal?

I have just rang my vet about bisolvon and he said that he would only give that as a last resort if Hugos URI gets worse. I'm just stuck about what to do and how to get the little thing better. After 2 weeks of baytril and 2 weeks of septrin surely he should be better
