I'm really upset. Went in for something today and all the animals, fish and everything are gone :( That's where I bought Jack and Charlie, they are so helpful and full of good advice, I can't imagine ever getting a pet anywhere else.

They said they want more room for other stuff, and were filling the shelves with giant bags of dog food. How sad.

aw thats a shame, at least youve got people on here you can talk to O0

Personally I think it's a great step, they can still give out the advice to customers but won't sell animals to anyone that wants to buy them that could end up anywhere.

Happy day for animals, not sad!

But what about a responsible pet owner like me? Where will my next piggie come from? Next shop selling them is quite a drive away I believe.

Thats absolutely fantastic!!! :D :D :D

I am grinning from ear to ear! If only more petshops would stop selling animals! O0 O0

Lizzie - why support petshops in buying animals, and allowing backyard breeding to continue, when there are thousands of rescue piggies in great need of new home?

This has made my day :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Your next piggies should come from rescues. Everybody should be rescuing, and all pet shops should stop selling animals until there are none left in rescues and everybody has learnt to be a responsible pet owner! Thats just my opinion though. Why get a pig from a pet shop, when you could rescue one that is in desperate need of a home?

Good move I applaud them. Yep I agree next pig should be from a rescue. They sound like decent people. :)

I agree 100% DHS..there is absolutely no need for petstores to sell animals >:(

What about all the other owners they sell to that ARENT responsible? Perhaps you could consider adopting one from a rescue next time instead? You don't have to buy them from a shop when there are so many across the UK without homes.

thats fantastic news, you should feel pleased about this, if all petshops didnt sell animals their would be far fewer rescues needing homes :) you can get you next pets from rescues tbh I'm a bit shocked that you asked where you could get your next pets from , members of this forum should know by now how many recues rae needing homes :)

i only go to one petshop and they dont sell pets either :)

This is good news! I've never bought a guinea pig from a pet shop and I never would, not while there's so many out there in need of a good home.

i have too, maisy was form a petshop and charlie was too, but i did look others places for a hamster and i only got charlie from there because he had been there 5months with no toys or handling and i felt sorry for him :(

I bought two hamsters in a pet shop yesterday. :-\ I did search the net for rescue places that take in hamster all day first though. I wish that the pet shop hadnt been there, and then I couldnt have bought them from there.

I think pet shops are ok to sell animals as long as they are well cared for and the person selling them have info about what animals they actually sell to give to the new owners :)
as most pet shop assistants no NOTHING about the animals if you ask them a question 98)
However if they stop selling them then there would be no piggies left after they have all gone and all the rescue ones are gone :'( :'(

ILA the thing which worries me about pet shops selling pets is they dont know where they are going, new owners are not home checked etc. its to easy to buy a pet on impulse >:(

True but most of them are high priced in pet shops so that for one puts some people off - definitely does me ;D
Yeah you dont know where they are going but the majority of them go to good homes if not then they will sell them again and it is just like rehoming them again really if you think about it - passing from one home to another :)

It would never happen that piggies would disappear. In an ideal world there would be no pet shops selling animals (who cares if they have all the knowledge in the world - they will sell them to anyone and everyone that wants one) and none in rescue. Only then would there be regulated, high-standard caring breeders. But be realistic - it's never going to happen, is it?

Pet stores are probably where 99% of impulse pet purchases take place. If they don't sell animals then people actually have to think before they get an animal which any good owner would do. For every person that cares and has done their research, I'm sure there are another 20 who thought the animal was cute but don't have a second clue about how to care for it. I can assure you that the majority of pet shop purchases do NOT go to good homes, hence why there are so many unwanted animals across the country.

yeah i was talking bout in another world ;D anyway that was just my opinion on what i thought ;) no one can change my mind on how i think ;D

A lot of the good homes turn to bad homes quickly when the owners lose interest! If the only place to get animals was from regulated, high standard breederes the world would be a better place, I think. I reckon pet shops should be banned from selling animals altogether. It would make it much more difficult to buy a pet, meaning people would have a chance to think about what they are taking on first.

I think it's great your pet shop has stopped selling animals. Definately get a rescue pig/pigs next time

I have to agree with the majority of the other posts, I think that is wonderful news they have given it up. I wonder why they decided to do it?

To the original poster - there are so many beautiful pigs in rescue of all types and ages, including many, many babies born there, I'm sure when you are looking again for more piggies the people who post here will be able to help you find some close to you, the rescues are full to bursting.

Because they werent selling enough to justify keeping them? They can use the shop space in a more productive way by making more on food than they do pets O0

i can see why you might be upset, but as the others have said, really it's for the best. there are SO many unwanted poor little piggies out there needing homes, yet many, many people will not even think about rescuing. it would be good if all shops stopped selling-but as daftscotslass said, it's not going to happen is it? they will just sell to anyone who wants a piggie, and whilst there are good owners like you out there, there are probably at least twice as many who aren't. and shops aren't going to turn away custom are they?
i think everyone should rescue, i didn't before i knew, but i would definitely now, however there isn't a rescue devoted to piggies near me, and the RSPCA don't have many piggies usually, but there are so many unwanted piggies out there, even young babies, i wish everyone one would. Plus, rescues make sure their piggies are going to good homes, where they'll be cared for like they need. i think pet shops should at least have to do that. i understand why you're feeling sad, but try and see it as a good thing and i bet in the future you'll feel great for rescuing. the only problem would be if there isn't one near, but you could cross that bridge when you come to it O0

When I bought the piggies I had no idea that rescues existed. But I can't see the problem with pet shops selling animals. Just because someone goes to a rescue rather than a shop, why would that mean they will turn into a better pet owner? I could go along to a rescue, pick up a pig or other animal, and still treat it badly.

Luckily I'm not looking for another piggie at the moment, and to be honest I'm not sure I ever will. I've promised OH no more furry animals (he didn't reckon with the tropical fish though!).

Yes, I bought my guinea pigs on an impulse, after the death of our hamster. Does that make me a bad owner?

Buying on impulse doesn't make you a bad owner - I'm sure since you bought them you've done some research into their care and look after them well. But you must appreciate that the vast majority of people who buy on impulse do not do this.

Yes, actually, pigs adopted from rescues actually do get better owners. Most rescues will home check and educate those who are just starting out with owning cavies. Many will also follow up to make sure you and your animals are doing well. Reputable rescues do not adopt out to anyone and everyone and, unlike pet shops, will refuse people who want to adopt.

With a pet shop the interaction ends once you've parted with your money and walk out. They don't do anything to check who the animals go to. With rescue your money goes towards caring for more homeless pigs. With a pet shop your money pays for them to buy 4 more animals from a mill breeder to be sold to any old home be it as a forgotten about pet in a back garden or food for a hungry reptile.

I don't want to start argument but not all pet shops sell animals for profit. My local petshop won't sell to anyone only regular customers and makes them wait 4-5 days before allowing them to get the animal so it isn't just an impulse buy and he has bought the animals from the 1 breeder not a company for over 13 years and has never had any problems with any of the animals. He asks them questions and if he feels they won't look afer the animal he won't let them have one. Even once they have left the shop he likes the owners to bring them in to see him and see how they are doing. He only gets animals in about 4 times in a year. If the owner has problems he will always take the animal back no matter how long ago he sold it so it can get a better life with someone else if they can't take care of the animal any longer. Not all pet shops are bad who sell animals some do care about animals.

I notice you're in Scotland - where is this pet shop? I'd love to visit it. In over 15 years of keeping pigs I've never heard anything of the sort happening before. Does he do home checks, too?

Sunshine was an impulse buy. I just couldn't leave him in the pet shop. He melted my heart I am so glad I got him. I had looked into getting a pig, I wasn't meant to be buying on the day I got him, just looking around for prices. Sunshine was in with a bun, how could I possibly leave him?

But I have been educated enough to know that I can never get a pig from a pet shop again. I know too much now.
