My piggie has mange mites (I think)

Hello again,

I need some help. I noticed that one of my pigs had a really nasty looking patch on his back and when I had a look underneath the fur, the skin had blistered and was white and flaky around the scabs! I took him to the vet the next day and she gave him an Ivermectin injection, saying it was mites. That was on Saturday but there hasn't been any improvement since then. He's still eating his food and seems to be okay generally (he was certainly quite feisty when I was bathing him!) but the skin hasn't healed. In fact, it looks likes it spreading! Can someone please tell me how long the medicine normally takes to work and whether there's anything I can do to help his recovery? I'm really worried because I have heard that pigs can die from mange mites.

Ivermectin is effective in killing mange/selnic mites but does need to be repeated to kill every stage of the life cycle, if the patch is spreading it may be a fungal infection. We had some guineas come in with mange and they showed a huge improvement after 14 days when all the mites had been killed off but their patches never spread after the first treatment with ivermec. Could you post a picture of his patch?
 
I replied on the other thread you posted on. :)

As Vikki said it needs repeating and if he has had one injection I would continue with that. Cuzzy had 3 injections spaced 10 days apart.
