My piggy keeps making a funny noise like he's burping or parping

I am worried about my dear little Copernicus. He keeps making this strange noise, like he's passing gas or something. It's definetely not a chirping sound or a squeaking noise. It sounds more like he's either burping or parping. Can anyone please tell me what might cause such a thing and whether it's something we need to worry about.

He's moving around and eating, and he's still as feisty as ever. We're just worried about this noise as it seems to be getting more frequent. We have fed it some cabbage, which I know can cause gas production, but it was only a small amount. Normally, we give him kale, cucumber and carrots everyday like the rest of them. Please help

Hiya,

It could be heaving hiccups which can happen when they eat too much too quickly or have an intolerance to some foods. I've known Kale to cause this.

Hope he is ok,

Louise
:)

Thanks for letting me know. We have been feeding him a fair bit of kale lately but we have moved on to the carrots and cucumber now so hopefully that will solve the problem...!

Hiya :) It sounds like it could be an URI (upper respitory infection) which would need anti biotics from the vet. My Marigold was making a similar sound and I guessed it might be an URI. She's now on anti biotics and making a good recovery.
So I would recommend popping him down to the vet and mentioning the URI possiblity

Thankyou for the advice but, apart from the noise he's been making, he seems fine. He was even popcorning this afternoon. He seems to be okay and he's eating his food. He hasn't been making the noise as much either so I will keep an eye on him and see what happens...

Thanks though!

I'm sorry but as you might know pigs are good at hiding illness. Just because he is eating and popcorning around it doesn't mean he isn't ill

Marigold was as happy as larry and behaving perfectly normally but was seriously ill.

I understand what you are saying and I am aware of the fact the guinea pigs hide their illnesses. However, some physical symptoms of a URI he would be unable to hide (such as crusty eyes, a snotty nose and his coat being in poor condition) because they would manifest themselves as part of the illness and he would not be able to control them. I have been checking for these and there are no signs of them at all. His coat is in excellent condition; there is no crustiness around the eyes and, although he has had sneezes before, they are not persistent and only occur when he has had his nose in his hay for a long time.

I really appreciate your advice and, if he had even the slightest sign of one of the symptons of a URI, I would take him to the vet immediately. However, the only sign of any illness is the bizarre noise he is making, which, incidently, stopped being as noisy and regular once he took a massive poop. He has made it since then but only once or twice during the time I have been with him (which is a lot of the day because he lives in the living room and I am on holiday at the moment). I have also changed the type of hay he eats from ordinary hay to timothy hay so it's possible that he might have a bit of an upset tummy.
