hi all, i'm back from my holiday to the UK and hope you're all well.
This is gonna be a long one....
As some of you know I struggled to find someone to look after my piggles while we were away and against my better judgement we agreed for the local pet shop to look after them.
Because I was not happy for them to be on the shop floor with constant customers etc, they were put downstairs in the pet shop which is also the storage area. Actually I was happy with this, it was cool and quiet down there and they were in their own cage with their own bedrooms etc.
I talked the guy through all the details, veggies, cleaning, pellets, water etc etc and provided everything required for all the above. He kept repeating yes I know I have had lots of experience with guinea pigs.
Anyway to cut a very long story short when I went to pick them up on Wednesday the cage was absolutely filthy. Full of poo inches deep and rotting vegetables, soaked through with urine, loads of flies buzzing around and basically absolutely revolting. Needless to say I was beyond upset. My poor babies.
I couldn't get them home fast enough. I thoroughly cleaned everything with vinegar and water and left it out in the sun to dry. I filled a little bowl with water and bathed just their feet and bottoms a bit and got them settled as fast as possible in a nice clean home.
After they were settled I noticed that Barbie was sneezing and not moving around very much. When I opened the fridge she was wheeking but like a wheezy wheek. Also they don't seem very interested in hay? :{. I wonder if this is because they have been given so many veggies? I haven't seen barbie eat hay at all!
So yesterday I took them to the vet (not cavvy savvy because there isn't one). He told me that they seem fine but this is the same one who struggled to even sex them!
I know that they are not fine, they are quiet, no popcorning at all, Barbie doesn't eat hay, she is not sneezing anymore but is very quiet and lethargic.
Please can you tell me what you guys think? Do you think all that filth and flies has caused them some kind of illness? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
What a stupid piggy mummy I have been going against my gut feeling.
