hi all, i'm back from my holiday to the UK and hope you're all well.

This is gonna be a long one....

As some of you know I struggled to find someone to look after my piggles while we were away and against my better judgement we agreed for the local pet shop to look after them.

Because I was not happy for them to be on the shop floor with constant customers etc, they were put downstairs in the pet shop which is also the storage area. Actually I was happy with this, it was cool and quiet down there and they were in their own cage with their own bedrooms etc.

I talked the guy through all the details, veggies, cleaning, pellets, water etc etc and provided everything required for all the above. He kept repeating yes I know I have had lots of experience with guinea pigs.

Anyway to cut a very long story short when I went to pick them up on Wednesday the cage was absolutely filthy. Full of poo inches deep and rotting vegetables, soaked through with urine, loads of flies buzzing around and basically absolutely revolting. Needless to say I was beyond upset. My poor babies.

I couldn't get them home fast enough. I thoroughly cleaned everything with vinegar and water and left it out in the sun to dry. I filled a little bowl with water and bathed just their feet and bottoms a bit and got them settled as fast as possible in a nice clean home.

After they were settled I noticed that Barbie was sneezing and not moving around very much. When I opened the fridge she was wheeking but like a wheezy wheek. Also they don't seem very interested in hay? :{. I wonder if this is because they have been given so many veggies? I haven't seen barbie eat hay at all!

So yesterday I took them to the vet (not cavvy savvy because there isn't one). He told me that they seem fine but this is the same one who struggled to even sex them!

I know that they are not fine, they are quiet, no popcorning at all, Barbie doesn't eat hay, she is not sneezing anymore but is very quiet and lethargic.

Please can you tell me what you guys think? Do you think all that filth and flies has caused them some kind of illness? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

What a stupid piggy mummy I have been going against my gut feeling.

Thanks for reading
Tracey xx

Oh gosh! Thats awful!
I'm sorry I don't know what you can do for them apart from maybe try another vet. If Barbie has a respiratory infection it can be fatal. Just do what you can to make them comfortable for now. I'm sure they're glad you are back!

Ask for some baytril from a vet and check them all over for flystrike!

Hope they ar eok

thanks for the replies.

fly strike? can you give me an idea what I should look for? and if i see it what do i do?

baytril - i can go to the vet tomorrow, hope they have it here in greece? do you think i should dose them both? do you know the dose, amount, how many days etc? just so I can compare it with what the vet tells me.

my nearest exotics specialist is a 10 hour car drive!

oh blimey, ive just seen this, was meaning to ask how your break was, oh your poor piggies, how are they now please?

Thats shocking you put your trust in someone where you think they will be ok and this happens, so sorry hope your babies are ok

That is totally disgusting and evil! You need to report this awful man. He clearly does not care about animals. Maybe they have breathing problems due to being in their own urine for so long. I hope you did not pay the man and shouted at him. The vet is clearly useless which does not help either.

Really sorry to hear this, just shows that you can't trust pet shops. Sounds like the filithy living conditions have made them unwell, maybe them living in their own faeces hasn't helped. I don't know what to suggest but now they are back with you I hope they are ok.

Oh my god thats dreadful:(

Living in those filfthy conditions wont have done them any good what so ever. I really hope that they are going to be ok, but I do think you need to treat them ASAP....

I hope someone experienced in this can help you.

This pet shop owner should not be allowed to be anywhere near animals. By the sounds of it, he couldnt give a damn, and is a sad excused for a human being.

I hope your piggies get better soon.

x

Oh God that's awful, you put your trust in him and he let you down, hope your babies are ok.

How could anyone not care about the welfare of any animal and the fact he said he had loads of experience looking after piggies too, I would go back to the shop and give him the vets bill and have a go at him and also ask him WHY?
