Poor Gerty has got a suspected UTI. Took her to the vets today because she's had a wet bum for a few days & hasn't got any better with cranberry juice. The vet said her bum looked a little inflamed, he also tested her wee & there was a trace of protein. She's had an anti inflammatory injection & is now on Baytril - poor piggy 8...
Please can you all send her healing vibes? xx

awwww, definately healing vibes coming thru....poor Gerty, may she feel better soon!

Poor Gerty, we all send you healings vibes sweetheart x

Keep us updated x

A UTI is a urinary tract infection i.e a problem with their wee!

Sending healing vibes to Gerty, hope she's ok. I feed dried yarrow for this from Galen's Garden, don't know if it helps but can't hurt to try!

Thanks Sophie, I'll give it a try xx
I think we posted at the same time there :))

What dosage of Baytril is she on? 0.4mls is the correct dosage for a piggy with a UTI if they are an adult. If the Baytril is not effective it may be worth asking about Septrin (again the usual dose is 0.4mls) but with a severe infection you can use higher dosages to good effect.

Huge healing vibes from me and Fanny Adams (she knows just how your piggy feels x)

Sending lots of healing vibes to Gerty!
Hopefully she'll be right as rain when you next go to the vets :)

Thanks Vikki, she is on 0.4mls of Baytril. I'll see how she goes & mention Septrin to the vet when I go back x

Have a look on here: http://www.guinealynx.info/uti.html

I have had two guinea pigs with infectious UTI this spring/summer and lost one to ongoing bladder stone/cystitis trouble.

- The correct dose for baytril is 0.4 ml TWICE daily. PLEASE give it to her and go back for more when you have used it up.
- Gertie also needs some painkiller, as you reported considerable swelling (from vet). Her bladder and urethra are very painful right now and peeing is excruciating!
- you can use bepanthen salve (from pharmacy) on the swollen bits and where there are burns from the pee.
- To counter the effect of the baytril on her guts, she needs a probiotic (either from vets or from p@H).
- If baytril doesn't work, badger your vet to prescribe pediatric septrin 0.5 ml twice daily for an adult guinea pig. This mild antibiotic is a lot easier on the guts and works especially well on UTI.
- Keep a giving Gertie as much unsweetened juice/water mix, best by sryinge. As much as she will take as often as possible.
- Gertie needs to have an x-ray (without anesthesia) to exclude the presence crystals/bladder stones, which are a frequent cause of UTI and need to be treated (even if some vets are afraid of them), because they can kill a guinea pig under immense suffering.

Wishing you all the best - and URGING you to up the dosis of baytril, please!

Thanks for this, I will up her dose of Baytril & I already have some pro biotic here so will start using that. I remember seeing somewhere that I had to wait about an hour after her antibiotics before giving the probiotic?
I have been giving her cranberry juice - although most of it ends up spat out - she's a little madam.
I have sudocrem - will that work the same as bepanthan?
I'm back at the vets this afternoon so I'll discuss everything you've mentioned with him xx

Thats Glynis I should have made it clear that it was a twice a day -c assumption is the mother of all mess ups and all that just presumed 0.4ml was the single dose and most vets would recommend antibiotics being split into two doses over the day.

The only dose of Septrin that would shift Fanny adams infection was 0.75mls of septrin x 2 daily but that was a severe infection, she had no problems with taking that ammount.

Echo all vicky t's advice which is excellent :)

My piggies would't take cranberry juice pure, but would take when I syringed a half juice/half water mix.

I give a pinch of probiotic in a bit of cucumber disguised as a bedtime treat.

Thank you for upping the dosis! Quite often vets who are not experienced will not go to the maximum dosis for an adult piggie; or there might indeed have been a misunderstanding. Unfortunately, as you are reporting a full blown UTI, it is necessary to treat it with respect.

Be aware that some UTI's can be very slow to clear and may come back. Don't panic when you encounter symptoms like bloody or rusty urine.

I have never used your cream, but if it is a mild one, use it very thinly on a patch and wait and see.

The only officially listed antibiotic for rodents is baytril. That is why vets not specialising will prescribe it and refuse to give anything else. However, baytril quite hard on the body (loss of appetite and squidgy poo), so exotic animal specialists have started to use other non-penicillin antibiotics.
Pediatric septrin (which contains the active ingredient mentioned on the guinealynx website) is especially recommended for UTI's. It has a banana flavour, so my piggies just LOVE it and there is none of the struggle to get it down, which is more than an added bonus! I battled it through with my vet over Llewelyn's cystitis this spring, and as it is now officially on the books, I had no problems getting it for Nerys - a fight well worth, in my opinion. It might help if you armed yourself with a printout from the guinealynx, though your vet won't love you for it!

Give poor Gertie a cuddle from me!

Thank you so much - I think the vet already thinks that I am mad when I take print outs etc so I'm not worried about that - piggy health comes first :))

even my OZ vet who i trusted with my beloved Dukey always said TWICE DAILY..............def do that please love it will then kick into the system and work x>>

I do hope your vet looks at the info and then does the research.......i'm hoping over time i'll also get my lovely vet to do same, it's way more harder to get them here to understand we've not had the quantities of animals/furries or the education from you all in the UK and US regarding their health :)

I hope he will - he does seem very interested & discusses things with me as if I am some sort of expert :))

So glad that there's such kind people on here who have experience with these things - thanks everyone.
Suzanne xx

Thanks for taking our advice on board!

Keeping my fingers crossed for your visit to the vet - mine have started to flinch at the mention of "it's been recommended by the forum"...!

Best of luck for Gertie - and you! Hope she is feeling well again soon. x
