So Mallow, 11 month old coronet sow, has always been a sneezy pig. Today she sneezed more than normal and by this evening she was snuffly- so i started her on septrin for a suspected URI and planned to take her to the vet first thing tomorrow.
Its now 2.30am and Mallow is full on snorting and sounding so congested! :( no discharge from eyes or nose as yet. Still eating and drinking.

She is currently camped out in the living room with me under this contraption! Trying to make a wee steam room of boiling water and olbas oil to clear her congestion!

Thanks gizzy. Life likes to kick us when we are down, thats for sure! Fudge has meds at 8am.. Its going to be a sleepless night and a long day for me tomorrow!

Took Mallow in to the vet this morning- didnt see my usual vet but one who is also experienced with piggies, she was excellent and very thorough and had read through fudges notes too! I didnt take fudge today as i only have the one carrier and didnt want her sharing with Mallow as she is already susceptible to URI's. But i filled her on fudge and she update her file.

Mallows chest and throat are clear but she does have a bit of restricted air flow in her nostrils. There is congestion in there so iv to continue with septrin for 5 days and if no improvement in 48 hours, to try her on metacalm too. Iv also to continue with the steam and olbas this really helped last night. Heres hoping it goes away!x

Oh Adelle,

Gosh you are certainly having your turn of poorly piggies right now.

I hope Mallow will bounce back now with medicine and lots of Mummy cuddles.

Sending *healing vibes* to Mallow and as always to my darling Fudge and *hugs* to you xx

I sure am- starting to wonder what the hell I'm doing wrong!

True! Although does inner strength count?! Cause with that i could lift a car.. However on the outside, i wear wrist splints most days and struggle to hold my dinner plate in one hand :fog:.. So you'd have no competition! :xd:

glad Mallow is not to bad , just hope the meds keep it at bay

:lol!: No you are correct.

I am about the same of you when it comes to the physical side of things

I figure we will need to organise for a separate category to be added for 'inner strength' and then let the competition begin.

I am pretty sure we will have a lot of others ready to enter as well :tu:

Yep been thinking about both- used nebulisers in the vet school alot for cats and they where great. How do you use the bisolvin? I'm gonna give this a go and if still no improvement after metacalm i might try the biosolvin. The steam/olbas does shift it for a while. Just about to go do it again now x

Oh no, am sorry you have another poorly one. Did the vet suggest Bisolvon at all? it is good at clearing the nasal passages if there is mucous.

For the steam you could try one of these?

Boots Pharmaceuticals Easy Breathing Steam Inhaler - Boots

Hold over the nose in 5 second bursts.

I'm worried i would scald her with that as i cant control where she puts her face. Also it looks like it would end up hitting her eyes as well as nose and that might sting with the olbas. The hand help nebulisers are at least £45. If she ever gets this again and it looks like its going to be a recurring problem then il buy one :)

I need to get one too. I used the inhaler on my Buzz and it was ok, I was shown how to do it at clinic. It is only 2 drops of Olbas oil.

The Bisolvon is a powder and you would need to give a pea sized amount, ideally straight into the mouth but I tend to mix in water and use a syringe. It is only available from the vet though.

Been looking into bisolvon since u mentioned it earlier- will definately keep it in mind. I had a thought about trying fudge on it, but since its fluid she has and any mucus would be broken into fluid- i think it would be dangerous for her so quickly dismissed that idea!
The albas/antibiotics seem to be doing the trick for
mallow at the mo, Shes had a couple of quiet grunts but nothing like last night. I guess overnight will be a tell tale sign as normally these things worsen in the early hours. Thanks for your help x

It sounds hopeful. Fingers crossed for her, and hugs to you

I believe I have used this before the vets told me to sprinkle it onto there food as we had 2 piggys with URI and they both improved breathing very fast (this was around 6 months ago)

Thank you for that :) x

Not much of a change on septrin, still noisy breathing at night. Started on loxicom yesterday, breathing normally since! Must be inflamation, just hope its not allergies as thats going to be a nightmare! Will try taper off loxicom after septrin is finished and HOPE it stays away!

Can anyone help me with this.. I dont know what to do?! I was giving 1 unit of loxicom (cat 0.5mg/ml) twice a day. The vet (never used loxicom at this practice, was the practice in paisley i used it for crunchies bladder/ovarian cysts/post of spay) says she should have 6 DROPS of loxicom once a day? I was under the impression 2 units where standard dose, but i gave up to 4 with crunchie post of spay as she needed it, and it didnt harm her in the slightest (i always use gut protectants like zantac to prevent gut damage with loxicom). Mallow gets sniffly when next dose is due so she clearly needs it.. Now i dont know what dose to give? :(

Cat loxicom- 0.5mg/ml as apposed to 1.5mg/ml for dog. Only difference is the strength. Going with my own judgement on this, have used it long enough long before i owned gp's. I know the dose limits and i am aware that giving her less (if it is enough) is better. Currently no more snuffling from Mallow for 24hrs so have started slowly reducing loxicom to see what we can get down to, or off altogether. Heres hoping x
