Hey folks.
Luna is getting secondary gut issues from having huge ovarian cysts that are causing her pain. The gut issues are causing chronic bloating.
She's prescribed Ranitidine for the bloat and i give her Fibreplex x3 daily every day, regardless of whether the bloat is present that day or not because her poops are always either soft and mushy, tiny and tear dropped and she poops a lot less than she used too in general.
She's also been prescribed Metacam (4 drops daily) for the cystic pain.
I'm worried about giving her this long term because of the kidney issues that come along with it. I've agreed with the vet to give her it every day for 2 weeks to see if making her more comfortable reduces the instances of bloat.
So far, no luck, but I know I need to give her some pain meds for the cystic pain.
Any chance any of you know of any homeopathic/natural painkillers that are actually effective that I could try?

Cheers on advance!

Hey, I've decided against surgery unless it becomes absolutely necessary. She's also really elderly. Hard to tell because of the circumstances i got her in she looked really neglected and aged, but Ive had her for nearly 4 years and she had clearly been a full grown adult for a while as she had the ovarian cysts then. They haven't caused any issues at all until recently though.
I'd reluctantly consider hormone therapy, but I'd need to know alot more about it than I do just now.
I'm just focusing on the least invasive options for her.

Yes my vet has drained cysts by needle, this must be carried out by an experienced vet. Why have you not tried Chorulon injections @Coco&Luna ? They are given 2 weeks apart & will shrink the cysts, I've had lots of sows that have had them with no problems, even older ones :)

Hi there

i had a 5yr old guinea Ellie who had an ovarian cyst the size of a walnut diagnosed by a conscious ultrasound scan & she had 2 sessions of HCG chorulon hormone injections approx 7-10 days apart, she improved drastically, her general mood, coat condition both improved, the bleeding & UTI's caused by the cysts also stopped within days (only one bleed afterwards), her lump decreased in size really quickly so that you could hardly feel it was there (previously it could be seen also) they lasted approx a year & then Ellie had another batch of 2 injections approx 1yr later when she was deteriorating again (probably the cysts growing as they are most painful when growing apparently) she perked up again within 1-2 days,
some people have had no joy with the injections working, but for Ellie they were a lifesaver as my vet wouldn't spay her due to her age & complications, they worked brilliantly both times & have very few bad side effects (Ellie had none & i've not found any published so far other than, nothing improved/didn't work for some).
they are classed as a cattle hormone & will probably need a disclaimer signing though. I'm glad i had Ellie treated.

Ellie got back her quality of life & i lost her aged 8yrs to multiple health issues.
I would certainly discuss with your vet if they are treatable with HCG injections. feel free to ask if you need any more info - it was a few years ago now but happy to answer any questions i can to help.

with the bloat i would cut down/out on any gassy veg/brassica family (cabbage, etc),
maybe try a vibration pad (currently a car vibrating cover available in LIDL for £20 cant remember who's thread it was on here but maybe worth a go?) or gripe water from the baby aisle in supermarkets helps to disperse the air bubles & reduce gassy bloat. liquid bloat would need diuretics.

i know @Adele uses metacam long term for her guinea, she has kidney problems too but the pain relief is the most important factor for quality of life.

speedy recovery to your little one. xx
oh & i think fennel or parsley is good for bloat (although parsley is a womb stimulant so not sure if that would affect the cyst being ovarian) & willow leaves (salix) apparently have pain relieving qualities. Raspberry leaves & goosegrass (cleavers/stickybuds plant-preferably before flowering)are also thought to have anti-inflammatory qualities too.
xx

Thanks @Poppy'sMum and @GPTV I'm gunna phone and make an appointment today while I'm at work and see if I can get an appt to talk about these options. She's lost weight and I'm wkrried, she's not anorexic or anything yet, but I'm not happy, considering some of the weight will be the cysts too. She's £780 grams now. Lowest weight ever. Her poops look like this just now

Really soft with these mucousy stretchy bits on them so that's worrying me. I'm gunna take them to show the vet. I think draining them seems a good idea. Is it painful? And hoee fast do they refill?
I heard that the hormone treatment is very temporary which is why I was so mehh about it. And I didn't know the surgery was keyhole! I thought they had to do a full hysterectomy and I was Completely disregarding the idea.
Ok I'm late for work bye, thank you!

Ok, this has taken a 180 turn.
Thank you @pig in the city, I forgot to tag you in my last post!
The vet doesnt think this is ovary related.
They've not changed at all since she was last xrayed and she has become sick really quickly, so the vet is worried there is something sinister going on.
She was given abdominal xrays, which showed nothing.
Her teeth look completely normal on oral and x-ray exam that I got checked because she's constantly chattering her teeth.
Her weight is crashing. She's now at 680g.
She's been given septrin incase she has pneumonia because her breathing is heavy. I'll list symptoms and if anyone can think of anything I might have looked into.

Weight loss that seems to be speeding up.
Decreased appetite, but still shows alot of interest in veg and junk treats but never finishes them like she always has.
Teeth chattering (CONSTANTLY)
Biting EVERYTHING, including me.
Heavy breathing.
Lethargy (Sitting in one spot for loooong periods of time, but runs up wheeking when she hears my voice)
Soft, misshaped, small and mucousy poop.
Chronic bloating (though hasn't bloated for about 2 weeks!)
Slight flakeyness around the eyes.

Her teeth are fine, the vet says the lower molars are very slightly long but nothing that would require a dental at all and her cysts are unchanged, any opinions?

Would she chatter her teeth and bite if it was pneumonia? She also doesn't have a runny nose or the grunty crackly breathing which is what I always look out for with resp problems.

Sorry to hear this, she sounds very poorly. Teeth chattering usually means pain, so she needs pain meds urgently. Poor lass, you have done your best for her x

I've used Arnica before, but it was for severe bruising. Brilliant stuff but I would have thought it wasn't for piggies. Crossing my fingers for you & Luna.

I agree that she needs pain relief and if Metacam is not helping you can ask the vet to add in Tramadol. Has she had a chest xray at all or was it just her abdomen?

@pig in the city thank you :)
She's on metacam already, 4 drops a day, which is 0.2ml. It doesn't seem to make much of a difference she still chatters her teeth after it. What would be the max metacam dose for a pig Lunas weight? @helen @Tiamolly123 @Poppy'sMum Do any of you know? I really wanna give her another dose tonight, but I'm not sure it will be safe and I can't phone the vet until morning. She had the 0.2ml at around 4pm.
She's got very very soft poop now, verging on diarrhoea from the antibiotics. I knew this was gunna happen. Her stomach is so delicate and abx have always never agreed with her.
Please wish her luck.
I'll speak to the vet about a stronger pain med tomorrow.
I don't wanna give up yet, shes still running over wheeking sometimes, so I don't feel like all hope is lost.

My vet uses up to 0.4ml /kg of dog metacam twice a day. I use this dosage regularly with my piggies with no ill effects. If she weighs 680g the 0.2ml is a safe dosage and could be given twice a day, 12 hours apart. From the sound of it she needs a stronger painkiller adding in however if this dose is ineffective. My vet uses buprenorphine which l find to be very effective especially if you give by injection. I have no experience of Tramadol but l know others have used it with good effect. I hope she improves soon x
