We went with my daughter into the Ashford, Kent store to get some pet supplies.
They have a sign saying pets come 1st (remember that)
We were looking at the piggies & my hubby said that one isn't moving, I think it's stuck.
We spoke to someone that had come off the till, another one wandering round the store & one who worked in there vet department. They were all to busy going or doing something else, we told them the piggy was not moving, poss dead or dieing. Remember that sign! ! I ended up getting very upset & threatened to kick the door in & help the piggy myself. Oddly enough we found an assistant.
The little baby piggy was jammed into a wicker ball that had been chewed. The prongs of the ball were digging into his neck. (Sign saying check your pets toys & remove immediately if damaged) Over the top of him & the ball were 2 plastic igloos. Eventually they freed him, he was very withdrawn & quiet. My daughter who knew I was upset said she'd buy him for me. But I had to put my sensible hat on & had to leave him. I already had a husboar & his 3 wives.

By the way I buy those peppers from pets at home.like a stoney chewy thingy. Lol
Tia loves them but I wonder whether they would hurt her teeth.

That's really terrible! I would have been upset by it too. I had a bad experience with pets at home back when i got pet rats. They day I brought them home one of them was already poorly. I brought him to see the vets in the pets at home store the next day and stopped to let a member of staff know what had happened. They completely denied that the rat could possibly have been ill when they sold him, told me i need to take more responsibility and then offered to put him up for adoption! I was so mad with them. At the end of the day they are sales assistants not animal carers. I think that should change.

I’m very glad you found that poor piggy in time, less so that you couldn’t have him 😂

I hate the place (well places, sure some are worse than others).
I have a tropical fish tank and it's the only place I can buy frozen fishy food from nearby, hate giving them cash! I always go around looking at all of the animals.
A few years ago I pointed out a v poorly dwarf hamster with testicles twice the size they should be that were bright red, the staff really didn't seem too bothered! Very nearly bought him myself but was persuaded not to by my friend.
And on my last visit a few weeks ago three dead fish in a tank that they told me they'd checked first thing, at 11am! Had been dead longer than that! 'We'll get them out now', should have hung around to check!

Thank god you noticed the piggy.

Poor piggy, it's awful that is took so long for someone to listen to you and help him.

We really should march with our feet and try not to buy from them if we can find alternatives elsewhere. Never been one for putting ‘toys’ in cages. They need a nice lawn to chew and a good run around, best activity ever!

You were meant to be there at that time, to save that piggies life. As for how the staff behaved, I don’t know why but I’m not entirely surprised. Going by the talk I had with a member of staff in a p@h when looking to get piggies, they don’t seem to care....some of them anyway.

Yes, there is one lady at our local PAH who is very knowledgeable and you can tell is a pet lover, but last time I went the till operator was holding a rabbit on his chest and operating the tills. I asked him what he was doing with the rabbit (it looked scared) and he said he was trying to tame it. I said it looked very scared (as any animal would in that situation) and that he should be socialising it in a quiet room away from all these customers and till noises. He looked at me as though I am a batty old woman, which I am 😆

Good on you for telling him that x

Sad to hear as things like this do happen. Massive well done for helpin that little piggie.
I've been asked more than one to leave P@H
for gettin involved in piggie related things.
Well done.

Just to readdress the balance a bit- I’m waiting to hear about a job at PAH- I NEED a job so desperately but wanted to say IF I get it then the animals in Galashiels PAH will be well looked after by me and the correct advice given 😊👍

All the best for the jobbie..
I know most who work in animals shops are good people just as in life a few let you down.

Merrypigs I agree, although I'm totally off buying hamsters there, everyone of them has had Pyometra. Someone told me it is where they are overbred. It just makes me mad that some of the staff lie. They said the piggies were checked, several times a day. I've never seen ANY of their pets being checked. At least he's OK.
