Hi all,
So my piggy is on nebulisation gentamicin antibiotics as we have tried sulfatrim and baytril orally but the upper respiratory infection is still lingering unfortunately, so he is having 8ml in the chamber three times a day,
I wondered if anyone had any advice as I am 6 months pregnant whether this is dangerous for me to do. Currently I am popping him in the garage in his chamber an leaving the room whilst it is administered but then I have to get him out of there afterwards an wondered if I shouldn't really be breathing this in. Bit of a tricky situation as he needs this but I don't want to risk my baby if this is dangerous for me to be handling.
Any advice would help
Thank you!

Hi!

I would strongly recommend that you contact either your vet clinic or your gp. I don't have any specialist medical experience or knowledge in this area unfortunately, nor do I have instant access to relevant databases.

Gentamycin isn’t commonly given in pregnancy however the literature suggests that it is safe. Given that the dosing levels will be for a small animal I think that the pregnancy side of things shouldn’t cause too much concern in itself. Once-daily Dosing of Gentamicin in Obstetrics and Gynecology

However, pregnancy aside, exposure to any unnecessary antibiotics is not advisable as this can increase the risk of allergies and resistance.

What is the chamber? I’m imagining him in a plastic box or something with the medication going in… if that is the case I think I’d be inclined to do as you are, stay well away whilst the administration is underway and then leave it a few minutes for any airborne particles in the box to settle. I’d even consider taking it outside to take off the lid.

Wash your hands well after handling the pig though as there will be settled particles in the fur.

The very best option would be to delegate the task to someone else if you can though xx

Thank you for the responses, my vet clinic were not very helpful as they unfortunately didn't know either but advised I contact my GP, I will try calling in the morning, in the mean time I will make sure I wear a mask an do as suggested to take the chamber outside to open it up afterwards and thank you for the tip about the particles on his fur hadn't thought of that.
Thank you 😊
