I had never been interested in guinea pigs till a few months ago when i was at my friends house and she had two really nice guinea pigs so I asked my parents if I could get a guinea pig and they have said yes! which I am very happy about xx>>> and my friend is helping me learn how to look after them and I know it is best to get them from a rescue centre and not a pet shop like pets at home because they are treated like products not animals but my parents won't let me! what should I do to persuade them they are much better off from a rescue centre!??/

It's great that you're looking to adopt some piggies rather than buy them from a petshop.

Rescue guineas will have been health checked before rehoming and a good rescue will help you choose the right pigs for you, give advice on their care and after care advice if needed, you can always contact them if you need help. And some rescues will even board the piggies while you're on holiday!

There are many pigs in rescues all over the UK - let us know where you are and perhaps you could persuade your parents to let you visit your nearest rescue and find out more.

Pet shop piggies unfortunately are often inbred and from dubious sources, although lots of us (including me) have had pet shop piggies too.

Why won't they let you get rescue piggies? Do they have reasons?

Animals from pet shops are more likely to be mis-sexed, (therefore potentially pregnant), not handled enough so will need A LOT of time to get to know you and get to know that people are quite nice, and can be carrying illnesses that have never been noticed or treated, so you could end up with a big vet bill on your hands.

Hope that persuades your folks. If not, show them some pics of the gorgeous piggies currently needed homes, they should give in :))
 
Well I have had pets from pets shops but they die very quickly and it can be upsetting so I thought they will be much more healthy from a rescue I am in west yorkshire near huddersfeild i'm not sure were one is
 
Well I think they think it's too much bother to go and look around rescue centres when there is a pet shop down the road but there are alot healthier guineas in a rescue and need homes :(
 
Have you sorted out how you will house your guineas over the colder months now? From your previous thread, you weren't sure. x
 
Hi. :(|) I'm glad to hear Fudge and Rainbow persuaded you to get piggies! x) They are lovely aren't they! ;)

I have to admit: my two girls are from the pet shop which peanuttheguineapig is thinking of buying from. I have been very lucky with Fudge and Rainbow because they are now 5 years old! :(|) And are still healthy little bundles of joy! ;) However, if i ever get piggies again it will definatley be rescue guineas that i look for. :) I was only 9 when i got my guineas so my parents chose them for me and where they were from etc. However, i have looked after them ever since the day i saw them and i'm so proud with their age! ;) Now i understand that there are guinea pig rescues, i will deffo be researching in getting guinea pigs from one in the future! -c
 
We had 4 female guinea pigs from a pet shop in mid december. They were sexed correctly and in kept in single sex groups in the shop. They are lovely and healthy but now we find at least one of them is pregnant. I would definitely look to a rescue in the future.
 
Guinea Pigs from Rescues are better treated and kept than Pet shops. Nearly all Pet shops don't care about the animals, just the money they are getting.
Rescue piggys are cared for better and you will be sure that they have been kept properly and are healthy, they will also help you with the piggies and be there for advice.
Have you also considered getting 2 piggies as they live longer better lives with fellow piggy company.
I have to admit the piggies I got last were from a Private breeder who had them out on the lawn in a big cage with their mummy and daddy. They all looked very well kept and had plenty of dried food and veggies, I will proberbly consider going to a local rescue next time .

Me too. I got my piggies when I was 8/9 and my parents helped me choose them (we went to a private breeder). Perky recentley passed away at 5 1/2 years old but Piny (her sister) is still going strong and looks healthy and happy in her hay mound.

I just wanted to say that I bought George from an awesome pet shop.
If your pet shop is really bad then i advise you get your guinea pig from another better pet shop if your parents dont let you get it from a rescue center. George was very happy, healthy and playful I bought him from a good pet shop.:)
