hey everyone, well today i was shopping for piggy supplies especially pigloo's.
i couldnt go to the place that doesnt sell animals due to not much for piggies stocked there so i went to the petstore that i brough Basil from.
They have gotten even worse they now breed kittens to keep up with demand, have moved all the piggies to fish tanks that are only big enough for 3-4 goldfish, are bring in reptiles and more birds which will be house right next to the piggies. And the worst of all they had 2 piggies in a tank that said "not for sale" i asked why and she said they are now breeding piggies!
apparently not enoug piggies in this town to keep up with the demand.I tried as hard as i could to talk her out of it and the feeling of rescuing rather than petshop piggies and birth complications and all the rest of it and all she could say is ive bred nine litters so i know what I'm doing, and then she went on to ask if the sow would already be pregnant after 3 days in with the male!
I said surely if you have bred you would know there is almost not doubt she is pregnant it only takes minutes.for the first time i saw a peru x boar in an aussie petshop and he needed vet care urgently he was going nuts from all the mites on him i could see little scabs on his rump as well,i alerted her to this and the said they would take him to the vet but i don't believe her,i tried everything i could but feel so helpless that they are doing this grrrr:(

Well done for trying, for talking to her and trying to persuade her. I doubt as well that they'll take much interest in what you're saying, they're after profit and not interested in animal welfare from your description, but you could get through to other people in the shop at the time. If you know how many rescue piggies there are around then perhaps going in and telling her - loudly - while asking after the health of the piggies she is breeding and making sure they get the right diet and so on might be a good move. You might alert someone else in the shop to the fact that there are rescue piggies - not everyone knows.

I appreciate you feel as though you're banging your head against a brick wall, anyone who tries to speak to those who put profit first tends to feel this. But loud truthful comments can work wonders on their paying public - and that hurts them where they feel it most. The difficult part is not becoming too irritating! Keep it up, those breeding piggies are just doing what comes naturally, they don't deserve the public scrutiny or below standard food/accomodation. For their sake, I would return on a regular basis and carry on trying to educate - it just feels useless, it isn't really. You are being overheard!

thankyou,
the problem is our closest rescue is 4 hours away and not many people are willing to go through homechecks and that sort of travel:(.
this petshop is particuarly bad they are so willing to get more piggies in that each time i have seen them sell one they say to the person "a boy and girl together would be best and you can make money off it we will pay you 5 pound for each baby!,i know its not much but i have seen many people agree to it and i am left chasing them out to there cars trying to be as friendly as possible so i can try change there minds so far i have encountered 5 seperate people that have taken the petshop advice and not one has taken what ive said on boardgrrrr,i feel like an idiot,i have been thinking about opening up a rescue here one day to try eliminate the petshops x

OMG - that is awful; and there is so little you can do as a single person.

Might it help that you write to your local town council and alert him to the fact that by basic animal standards this is third world and outright animal cruelty? If you can take some pics and publish them on the internet, we can help with sending messages along those lines and put some international outrage behind it?

I'm not sure i have contacted the local council regarding petshops before and rang repeateldy with no replys and no change with the petshops:(.I did speak to the rescue lady today that i got Zanzi and Baker from and she said in Victoria(the state this happened in) that its illegal to also provide incorrect housing/breeding in petshops and legally all small animals have to be provided with igloos and correct diet ect,she said she will help me in reporting them but the big thing is one of the girls at the petshop will be taking the piggies home to breed and give birth so its not officailly breeding in the petstore therefore they may not get in trouble for that xxxxx

I don't know how it is even possible for people to do this. How do they sleep at night? I was out with my sister once and came across a guinea pig and rabbit breeder on a little road in the countryside. The rabbits were living in 3x1 foot hutches and couldn't turn round to get in the bedroom so they were exposed to the outdoors all the time. They had at least 4 adult pigs in each 3x1 hutch and several litters of babies. We were disgusted and left, later we rang the RSPCA and they wouldn't do anything because even though I could tell them exactly where it was I couldn't find a road name. I couldn't sleep well for weeks just thinking I could have done something more. There is something so wrong with these people mallethead mallethead mallethead Hope you and the lady from the rescue can help these poor little piggies.
