my 2 guinea pigs are really scared of me :( (ive had them just over a week)
they were gettin used to me n OH pickin them up, just by walking slow or staying still when we wanted to pick them up. But then sat night there were some really loud fireworks nearby then on the same night thunder n lightning, then yesterday afternoon my OH built them a run and i think the hammering scared them because they stayed in their bed, i got them out to put them in the run and they darted about running into the bars of the cage trying to get back in, and today they seemed so nervous when i went to feed them and check on them :( they wont stay in the run so ive left the cage door open to see if theyl come in or out when I'm not there.
I'm worried they dont trust me now they just run upstairs into their bed part to hide

They'll settle again soon enough. We've just had scaffolding put up on our building and it made an awful racket. The girls stayed hidden for a couple of days but are back to their usual selves. :)
Your guinea pigs are still in a new environment and it can take a long time for them to feel really secure. Be patient. It will happen.

Settling nervous piggies takes much longer than you'd think, especially if they have scarcely had human contact before and not a good home.

Here is a collection of tip on how to settle shy new guinea pigs:

We have a range of helpful threads that aim to answer the most frequently asks questions for new guinea pig owners in our reference section. It is worth haveing a good look around and also browse through the permanent threads at the top of the other sections.

Best of luck and lots of patience and persistence - it's worth it!

thanks for that link, maybe showing them the run straight after was a bit much. i thought id scared them forever lol , monty came out to eat while i was near the cage :) i think il keep my distance for a few days n let them settle in again

I have a piggy who is still terrified of me and I have had him for quite a while now. Lots of time and patience is needed.

Hi,

I am having the same problem I have had minejust over a week and they hide to. I have started to take out thier hidey hole for an hour and then they seem to eat and move around the cage as long as I am quiet and still:))

will take time

Please don't worry too much; in our experience this is completely normal. We've had our boys since May and they still run away when we approach and are only now just getting more inquisitive. They have a huge pen with lots of hidey-holes but even a big gust of wind can make them jump (plus they scare each other frequently!)

It takes a lot of time but week by week you will notice improvements and they will become more friendly and want to be handled. We only have to get the salad bag out the fridge now for them to sit up and take notice!

Good luck x
