We had our boar Wicket neutered on Monday of this week, the operation went fine and we picked him up late afternoon. He was a bit dazed looking when he got home but started to eat etc.

Tuesday morning he went back off to the vets for a jab to keep his stomach going well. He looked like his normal self and even the vet commented on how perky he looked!

Once home from the vets we gave him his 0.3ml of metacam and 0.4ml of Baytril. Since giving that he started to look fluffed out a bit in the face and the fur under his eyes looked damp and greasy! He was still eating and behaving generally normal.

We gave him 0.4ml of Baytril again that evening as instructed, although this seems a lot in my experience?

Yesterday morning he still didn't look right under the eyes but again is eating and passing stools etc. I again gave his 0.3ml of metacam and 0.4ml of Baytril mid morning. Again he seemed to still have this dishevelled look and greasiness under the eyes.

We decided not to give the evening dose of antibiotics as I was concerned they were not agreeing with him. Telephoned the vet this morning and he said to stop the antibiotics and to start him on some fibreplex.

He is eating and acting normal and does not appear to be in pain, weight is stable but he just has this greasy look on his fur under each eye.

Any ideas anybody as he is so lovely and we would be devastated if having him neutered has caused him to become poorly. He is 23 weeks old and weighs 1100grams if that helps.

I know vets vary tremendously in dosages for Baytril & Metacam. I've changed vets twice in last year or so. I'm now with a much better guinea pig savvy vet & she always says 0.2ml of Metacam twice a day & the same for Baytril if prescribed. This is neat Baytril. Previous vet gave me Baytril in Abidec multivitamin drops And prescribed 0.2ml but this would be greatly watered down. They also prescribed 2 drops of Metacam on food. This is a minuscule amount. Personally I would drop the dosage down to 0.2ml. If he wasn't eating normally I'd also use a probiotic such as Bio-Lapis or Fibreplex which is a supplement including probiotic & prebiotic. Maybe ask your vet in the morning, you can buy Fibreplex without prescription on line but if you want some quick as it's nearly the weekend you should be able to buy some from your vet.

Thank you for your help, do you think that the antibiotics have not agreed with him then and potentially caused the weeping eyes?

We have picked up fibreplex this afternoon and given him 1ml already and will give another dose late tonight.

Hoping that he improves and starts to look more himself. He is back at the vets first thing in the morning so will get a good check over then.

Hi, just to update you, good news .......... Wicket is back to his old self after stopping antibiotics and starting on fibreplex, he has stopped looking greasy under the eyes and looks youthful and happy again!
