I am hoping to rescue a 2-3 year old boar from my neglectful neighbours. I have 2 boys and 2 girls who obviously live separately. To give this boy some much needed company I would ideally like to introduce him to my girls but is it too late and is he too old for the op? It would be done by a gig/rabbit vet.
Also if I were to get any baby boys in the future, if they are neutered early enough can they all live happily as a mass group? (I'm not including my current 2 boys in this)

Thanks

Hi :wel:to the forum..

You can have a 2 to 3 year old boar neutered, this is best done by a Guinea pig savvy vet, if you live in the UK, we have a vet locator on the top of the main menu. We recommend a 6 weeks post op waiting time before introducing to sows. A few of our members have had surprises after introducing 5 weeks post op. http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/faq-introducing-and-re-introducing-guinea-pigs.38562/

A male guinea pig unlike rabbits, neutering does not change their Temperament, Behaviour. Neutering of boars only stops them fathering babies. Boars are ideally kept in pairs, as when the their hormones kick in at approximately after 4 months old the chances of fallouts in a group greater than 2 are more than 90%, so the chances of having a group of single piggies is high. http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/threads/boars-a-guide-to-successful-companionship.76162/

TY for the answer. I understand that this poor boy (who is now a permanent member of my family whatever happens) can't mix with my boys but what are the chances of him being a neutered huspig to my 2 lovely ladies? I understand the bonding may not be a success but am happy to try if there is a chance (however slim) of success........

I have 2 girls that are 3 years old, April this year we got Alfie, he was neutered and now lives happily with the girls!

Not had any bonding problems, but I would point out it's a long 6 week wait, until he can go in with the girls! We had to wait for Alfie to be old enough to have the op as well, so it seemed forever!

If your girls and the new boy are happy together, you could then introduce new girls, but no more boys, neutered or not!

Good luck!

TY, 6 weeks for him won't seem too bad, he's been handed over by my neighbours today. They had him in a tiny hutch, facing a fence, rarely cleaned out, no water at least once I know of, only been out in a run 3 times this year :( His life has improved already and in 6 weeks hopefully it will be even better!

My boy, Nelson was neutered at age 4+ (his exact age was unknown). It depends more on the health of the individual guinea pig :) Every operation carries a risk, but an older boar isn't necessarily at greater risk than a younger boar.
