Hi Guys, I don’t post on here often but I am feeling so bad for my little Moo and I need some piggy advice .

On Monday 30th Moo had been neutered so he can join a girlfriend as we thought it was unfair to keep him alone.
Procedure went smoothly, but we noticed on Saturday night his right stitch had either burst open or he had nibbled it that night and it was filled with a nasty white puss . It was infected !

I feel so bad for my little guy he is in pain, we went to the doctors and they prescribed him baytril 0.75 and loxicom 0.6 he weighs 1.12kg and is just more than a year old .

we have been told to flush the area out . I have been trying to clean it out with salt water and boiled water . But I can’t seem to get every last speck of gunk out of there as the insision is small deep and bloody. I also ordered some Manuka wound gel as I heard that was good and have been putting that on him .

I just wondered if anyone has experienced something similar and can give me some advice on what I’m doing and is it ok ? And how I can clean the wound out better as I can only just fit an earbud in there to try and get the gunk out .is It necessary to get it ALL out ? Because I can’t get at it there’s specks left We go back to vet on Friday so I’ll ask her also ..

Hi!

I am ever so sorry. Abscesses need to heal from the inside out and have to be kept open for as long as possible to allow all the infection to be drained out in the process as the wound should be getting less deep during the healing process and the pus should be pushed out. If necessary, you have to work the scab off that can form over the opening once it becomes smaller; it is not pleasant at all but necessary. Ideally you want to keep the abscess open for as close to come to 10 days to allow this healing process with constant draining and flushing in order to get every speck of pus out.
Abscesses are the most common post-op complication. Yours has thankfully formed close enough to the surface and and has burst on its own so your vet didn't have to lance it.

Any mild antiseptic, like saline solution made with adding 1 teasoon of salt to 250ml or half a pint of boiling water and then letting cool, hibiscrub or F10 antiseptic can be used.

Thanks for your advice I’ll take a look at that guide. I’ve just looked at his left hand stitches which have stayed together but at the top I can see a little bit of pus- .. I squeezed it out and wiped it down and I can’t feel / see any other lumps anywhere but I’m not sure wether that stitch will need to be opened up also if I have found some infection there also ? :( poor little guy

If anyone is having a similar issue - we washed out moos abscesses with saltwater - squirted it with a syringe and wiped around until all the puss was gone. He had antibiotics and we also used Manuka honey wound cream off amazon to help the wounds close up. It's vital to make sure there is no gunk left when the wounds close up to stop a reinfection
