Neutering - is it a good idea?

We bought what we thought were two females and guess what, a few months later we've got babies. We want to keep both parents and vet suggests castrating the male (Chippie) as an option, quoting £150 for this at an animal hospital.

How big a risk is the op? If Chippie got complications and died we'd never forgive ourselves. Is the quoted price a fair rate or should I shop around? Obviously I don't want to do it on the cheap but I want to know how much I should expect to pay to get a safe and proper job.

Others will inform you better about the pros and cons of neutering, but I know just from reading threads like this £150 is way over the top. xx

Where are you? £150 is outrageous. The normal is about £45 ish - I get charged £25 as the boars I take are rescues.............

Do not pay £150.00 - ring around and get other quotes - I cannot quite get over that.............

To get back on topic though - Yes I believe its a good idea particularly in circumstances as you have. The alternative is to bond the Dad with one of his babies (if you have a baby boy).

£150! wow Just lately I was quoted £45 but I am probably going to look for other vets as niether near me have done a neuter before so wouldn't really be happy about either of my boars going there. But yeah have a phone about because to me that seems steep! :)

Yep got to agree with Jane and Helen £150 is a rip off! If you google Cavy Spirit it will have info their on what to ask a vet about what gas they use etc etc. :)

Mine was expensive at £70, £150 is absolute robbery :o

See if you can find a guinea pig rescue somewhere nearish to you and ask them for a vet recommendation.

The op does carry a risk but this is reduced with a guinea competant vet.
Ask them lots of questions about how many neuters they do and success rate etc. I had one of my boars done and it was fine. As Hels says, if you have a baby boar, you could try bonding him with dad.

HOW MUCH?!

If he has a son he could happily live with him without being neutered, but if you wanted to keep him with the females it might be a good idea. A vet should be used to doing specifically guinea neutering.

I'm in shock at that price! I'm having one of my boys neutered tomorrow & its costing £45.69. Where abouts are you? someone may be able to recommend a vet to you :)
