I'm thinking of getting Frankie neutered so he can find a girlfriend so need to find out how good (or not) my vet is. I have the following questions to ask but please could you add things I've not thought of.

1. How many they carry out and success rate.
2. Pre-op and post-op care
3. Stitches or glue
4. Cost ?/

Thanks.

Thanks flintstones. Is there a GA that is better/worse than others or one that should be avoided?

Injectable, reversible Ga's seem to have the worse press. Do keep in my mind that he could have problems with adhesions and if he's not had a Ga before and has a heart condition then he could pass with the Ga on it's own.

There's many, many risks with neutering, so please make sure it is the correct decision and you are aware of all the risks.

Thank you, I really appreciate the advice. I've never had to think about these things before but want to do the best for Frankie.

What about boar dating? I must admit, I've never been able to neuter any of my pig's - Milo is neutered but that was the rescue who got him neutered.

if I needed to find a friend, I think I would do that first before considering neutering. Of course that's just my personal opinion.

I have contacted the most local-ish rescue (60 miles away) but they don't have any boars suitable at the moment. It is still a possibility though. I'm not going to rush into neutering, just want to be prepared if that is the road we take.

You sound like you have been thinking along the right lines as to what to ask your vet.

I get lonely boars who wont get along with girls in the rescue neutered and all my males (3) are neutered with females or groups of females and only ever had one infection (touch wood) but i do make their recovery cage as sterile as i can for 2 full weeks afterwards.

All boars here that have been placed with females and been adopted out to live with females have lived very happy lives with their partners. Yes you do hear of animals not coming through it (my dog died and was brought back when neutered) but these are thankfully very very low.

Are there REALLY vets out there who induce anaesthetic by injecting?! I can't imagine trying to find a vein on a pig!

OP - there are two main types of gaseous anaesthetic used in vets - isoflurane and sevoflurane. I'd ask what anaesthetic they use, as Flintstones suggested - if they say anything other than these two, I'd be concerned.

Between isoflurane and sevoflurane, sevo is considered "better", especially for small animals, or high risk animals. It stays in their system for a shorter amount of time, which means they have a quicker recovery. All vets use iso, but sevo is becoming more popular in general practice, but not all vets have it.

Yes - specifically for dentals as you can;t do a dental with an inhalation mask over the piggies face. Don;t think it;s necessarily injected into the vein......normally IP or I'm

On the rare occasions that Simon needs to use GA for dental work he still does it using isofluorane rather than injectables.
