hi
i have 2 piggies both skinnies father and daughter ! they are currently in seperate cages but i would like to put them together i have found a good vet ! who vets said was a good surgeon and used to piggies ,it is very exspensive £84 which isnt a problem as his welbeing is more important than the cost ! just wondered if anyone could give me any advice on after care i am really worried about him having this op so any advice would be gratefull thank u x

With a good vet, there shouldn't be any difference between a normal piggy and a skinny pig operation. I know of a few neutered skinnies, so it can be done.

To prepare for the operation, you may want to look at these links here; there a further links at the end of the hand feeding guide.
When you pick up your boy at the vets, please ask how soon you can give him metacam (painkiller) after his op and what dose in case he is struggling and off his food at first. He will get an injection during the operation, so you cannot medicate straight away.
Ideally he should pick up pretty much where he left and eat straight away. His poos may be fewer and look funny from the operation for the first day post op or so.

Keep weighing your boy regularly in the days and weeks after the op and see your vet as soon as possible if you notice a swelling in the groin area or a loss of appetite/weight.

Please be aware that you will need to plan for a full 6 weeks post op wait. I have got the surprise baby from a supposedly safe over 5 weeks post op boar and have since heard of a few more cases. Despite an increasing number of rescues neutering their boars with an obligatory 6 weeks wait, I have yet to hear of an unplanned pregnancy. It is simply not worth playing the statistics! ;)
