i've heard lots of different stories about neutering male ginnies, i was thinking about having my two long haired rescue boys done as they could then live together with the girls they came with, they live together at the moment but they occasionally squabble and thought that would be another good reason, can anyone give me some advice please?:);):);):{

The best advice is to find a vet who has done lots of piggy neuters before. :)

I had one of my boys neutered last year after 2 failed boy bondings (he was the bully) & he's happy with his ladies; the best thing for him by far :)

i would ask your local rescues who they recommend and how many piggies they have done! My Jive was a boar who would not tolerate other boars and loves living with the girls!

A question please.....

Human males, if castrated after puberty, maintain their ability to have an erection and may maintain libido (under certain medical conditions). Do castrated male Guineas still copulate? I ask because I read an article where the owner says her's do.

I have had a lot of boars neutered through my vet - rescues and my own boys. Personally I think its a great thing and I have never yet lost one. (touch wood).

They still do woo their lady/ladies and hump away but of course no resulting babies........

The sow does still of couse come into the season which drives the boys wild but no damage can be done.

I have had mixed experience of neutering but now I have found a very good vet have had many done with no problems at all. Find someone locally who has had many successul neuters and go to their vet if you can and decide it is best for your boys.

Can I just ask if you were thinking of putting both boys in with the girls if they were neutered? If so this will most likely lead to fighting as two neutered boys with a group of girls with fight over dominance and the sows. If they bicker now this would be greatly amplified by the presence of ladies.

There are risks with any operation and if your boys live together with a little bickering (Boys rolleyes what are they like lol) I would leave well alone. I have some pairs of boys which have the odd minor disagreement rumbling, a bit of strutting etc but 95% of the time get on fine.

The only time I get boys neutered is when they have a real problem (ie causing injury resulting in blood/ major aggression) living with other males. I have one boy who hates any other guinea who lives happily alone he is just a grumpy man! He likes his cuddles tho as long as you are not thinking about brushing his hair!

Good luck with what ever you decide :)

thanks very much everybody, i would like them to live all together if possible but will have a word with my vet and have a think:)):)):))

To be honest two boars in with a group of sows is a reciepe for fighting so it would be a bad idea.

Good luck with your chat with the vet

my vet said exactly the same thing today,they will more likely than not scrap even when neutered, when near the girls, he has taken in quite a few over the years, and although he always neuters the boys he said they still dont mix as they still only have one thing on there mind,
yhanks for the advice, my boys will keep there bits and bobs it seems:)):)):))
