Hi Guys, not actually got a piggie yet but I have been looking into it and a friend just gave me a huge outdoor hutch (I will bring them in in the winter). I plan to go to a rescue centre (I live near Lockerbie) but would really like to get baby piggies (I have 5 and 2 year old girls and want to make sure they are child friendly from the start). I really like the scruffy looking piggies (although not long haired).

Any suggestions/pointers welcome.

Hello Gen and a big warm welcome to the forum! :)

To find a rescue near you, you can try the Guinea Pig Rehoming Website, just find your area in the drop down box:
http://www.guineapigrehome.org.uk/gp/centres.asp

You can also take a look in our rescue and rehoming section to see if there is any piggies can might like to adopt, if theres one not in your area it might be possible to organise a piggie train:

There is a brilliant website, Guinea Lynx which covers all topics of guinea pig care from hosuing to food and bedding if you fancy reading and researching :)

Your not far from Becklen Rescue in Gretna. Why not call them to arrange a visit and see which ones catch your eye. Short haired ones are probably best for 1st time owners. Let us know how you get on :))

Hello and welcome to the forum :)
Really glad you want to go to a rescue and also that a rescue is near you. :)
Rescues often do have baby piggys so well worth contacting them and finding out whats available or likely to be available soon - and to get on their lists....

I would strongly recommend contacting Becklen Rescue in Gretna; they are the best in your region. I have rehomed from them myself and can recommend them warmly.

Two piggies will need a minimum of 2x4 ft (60x120cm) ground space, as per RSPCA recommendation. Rescues don't rehome piggies into single situations since guinea pigs are herd animals and not wired to be on their own. Please make sure that your children can't get at the piggies without supervision.

I know that Becklen have babies ready to go now, I sneaked 2 home with me last weeeeek ;)
